Hot idle problem

Postby burrows1980 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:59 pm

Hi,

I posted on here about 6 months about a problem i was having with the engine after having the injectors replaced..

When cold the van idles fine but when it reaches operating temperature it develops a lumpy idle, I took it back to the Delphi bloke who replaced the injectors loads of times but he couldn't fix the fault. He checked for air in the fuel lines, took it to Ford round the corner and updated the software on ECU, did something with the fuel filter to stop fuel going back to the tank on the return pipe with a ball bearing inserted in pipe (cant quite remember what he did but made sense at the time) replaced injector plugs with new Delphi ones spliced into loom, he said it had something to do with the temperature of the fuel?????

He replaced the injector plugs because when I first picked it up after having the injectors replaced, it started cutting out when you accelerated, I managed to get it back there nxt day and he said straight away the plugs were loose and needed new ones? I did ask if the new injectors were working properly, he showed me his laptop screen plugged into the van and pointed out the injectors firing within the range etc they should and various other things, b as im electrican not a mechanic it made no sense to me so took his word for it.

I gave up in the end of going back and to, and what made it worse was they never needed replacing in my opinion, as the fault I originally had turned out to be a CV joint knackered on the Passenger drive shaft, giving a horrendous knocking sound ( that i thought was a misfire!!) anyway, I had that much on last year I gave up trying to sort the idle problem.

Ive checked for codes and nothing shows up, as I say it only does it when reaching operating temp.. It does have a egr blank plate installed if that makes any difference?

Does anyone have a idea of what it might be?

Im just so annoyed as it ran perfect before!! Also when you blip the throttle it feels lumpy even when cold. I did fit a new accerator pedal whe I first got the van as there was a fault on it, its not a genuine Ford one, got it from Flea Bay. I cant remember if the van was lumpy when blipping the throttle before the pedal change, dont think it was though!

I bought it second hand last April, the only problem was a cracked screen, and a dodgy nosie when taking up load (like a weird rattle noise).

I went round the hills, new injectors, EGR blank, took to a so called gearbox specialist who said it was fine but the clutch plate springs were loose and would cause the problem, which I said to him that it wasnt that sort of noise but he replaced clutch disc and cover. Noise still there. So I got it on a wheel free ramp, put it in first gear sent it up in air looked underneath and could see the the drive shaft moving up and down around the CV! The gearbox guy and said to me he had put the van on his wheel free to check the driveshafts! did he **** I put a new shaft in and the banging knocking, almost like a bad misfire disappeared but the rattle still there, but I can only assume the driveshaft has damaged the bearing it passes through into the box, as it was moving considerably.

I'll replace it one day, it is leaking transmission fluid slightly so sooner rather than later!

It had a partial FFSH, almost a FSH when I bought it last one missing. I just wish I had gone with my gut reaction of it being a transmission problem when I first bought it, but I let other people lead me to believe it was injectors, saying injectors can make weird noises and running issues.. But i can't do anything to change that now other than get to the bottom of the lumpy idle when hot.

As I said above it idles fine when cold and when its warming up only when it reaches operating temperature, sometimes on a long run when not stopping for a while ( motorway etc) when coming to a stop it idles fine weirdly! not all the time though...

Its not my daily drive, mainly a weekend van, but still want to get it sorted..

Have you had a hot & cold compression test done, it could be a tight tappet, valve closed when engine cold and just a slight leak as everything warms up and expands a little or a sticky valve

I can do a comp test one night in the week, prob nxt weekend now though, but it was fine when I dropped it off at the Delphi garage and knackered when I picked it up..

Im thinking of finding somewhere else to get the injectors tested just to make sure its not the recon ones at fault...

The fuel return to tank when they fuel is up to temp is vital, he doesn't sound like a full Delphi agent!!!

The fuel temp shouldn't get over 90dehrees if it does there is a problem, it would heat up in no time if the fuel just circulated from pump to filter head just taking what little diesel it needed from main flow.

Often when theses pumps wear they become slightly noisy and create excessive fuel temps and cause the exact systems your having. Plus if the injectors where knackered its not often its not the pump that's caused them to fail.
