GEC Mk1 Transit on the move today

Postby Keef » Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:20 am

I spotted this on the back of a transporter heading East on the A27 today.

Not perfect but very nice.

Hmm, well I saw it for about 10 seconds as I overtook it and concluded "not perfect but very nice", the panelwork isn't as straight as it could be for starters.

I saw it close up a couple of years ago and 'nice' is as far as I could go! Thats only cos it's an early Mk1. TBH given it belongs to Ford it should be stunning........
But its not. Between the mismatched yellow paint, dings from load slips and the tape on the back light I hope to god she aint deteriorated! Not to mention I think its either a Mk2 shell or roof replacement. Come to think of it, I think disappointing is nearer to the truth....

I didn't realise that it belonged to Ford, it was being transported by On Time recovery company.

A pretty poor effort for a major company with probably the best resources you could get for restoring an old Transit!

Exactly. If I had their money I would have a yard full of complete minters that would be absolute show winners.

trust me it didnt look that nice not long after. The drvers back door had a badly matched patch of paint that had reacted like one type was celly and the other 2 pack. The passenger side rear light was held tgether with sellotape and there was a little load ding on the body just behind the drivers door that had broken the surface of the paint.
Maybe it was on the way to having a good paint job?

Yesterday there was still a ding just behind the drivers door which had originated from inside the van.

I wasn't that impressed with the seams between the lower side panels and sills etc either, being gloss black didn't help.

That was from just driving past on a duel carriageway.

There were cracks where the grooves for the Mk2 windscreen rubber 'ears' would be. What else would it be?
