That is the right book. the three cylinder running is more likely to be air in the fuel system, but the rattle/knocking is more likely to be the timing. start it up and one at a time slacken the pipe nut on each injector for a few seconds to let air out of the system and retighten each one in turn. if it runs better/ on all four thats one job done, you may have to repeat the bleeding more than once to clear all the air, bvefore it goes right. Also the tappets need checking as a lack of clearance or a pushrod jumped out will cause the same issue, then if ok go on to the timing and belt change. Any higher mileage transit, particularly with no history should have its belt changed as a matter of course as particularly the turbo versions are very sensitive to timing and all of them start far betterparticularly in cold weather with the timing spot on.

If the timing is definitely ok :?: :o Then it has to be air getting into the system/pump

Are all the fuel connections ok and round the right way :?:

Try a direct feed into the pump from a bottle of clean diesel fuel  (this bypasses all previous connections, the filter and it's housing etc.....that may be allowing air into the system)

Did you find where the other end of the disconnected vacume line went as I asked in the PM?

There are some very clever members on here, many of whome are more than willing to assist, but to do so we need the 'full facts'.

Please, for your own sake, post up the pictures I requested in this thread, that way we can ALL help you get to the bottom of this.

They'll probably use a scanner/code reader that is not compatible with your EPIC system and tell you "it's the pump"

check that the small bleed off pipe from the injectors has not come away from the return pipe.
follow the pipe down, it is close to the back of the engine behind the filter
and check your egr flap is opening to allow enough air in, ( if egr still in use)
my advise may not be right, but I like to give my 10p worth, and an answer even if wrong is nice to see.

Egr is moving fine

the leak is from the back of the filter on top where the housing is a pipe plugs into the back on the housing
