Harsh rattling noise when accelerating.

Postby sym jack » Sun Sep 15, 2013 12:15 pm

I have a 75ps Connect, when accelerating there is a harsh rattle type noise between 1750 & 2000 RPM, I understand that my Connect doesn't have a Dual Mass Flywheel could it be the springs in the clutch plate vibrating.

That's more than likely what it is. "Gearbox thrash". Changing the clutch and slave cylinder will more than likely cure the noise.

Oh and welcome to the forum :)

It was the springs on mine when it rattled. Put a full clutch and bearing in it and problem solved.

Hi, mine had a loud vibey rattle at mid revs and after much searching I found a stone in the exhaust shield underneath the van, I could hear the stone jumping around when tapping the shield but to remove it I had to take the shield half off.
Could be worth a few mins investigating.

Similar thing with my van. The retaining clips on the exhaust heat shield had corroded, letting the shield flap about at certain revs.

Our van has a similar noise - after ages fiddling round for something loose in the engine bay - have found the bracket that supports one of the intercooler pipes and fixes to the head has broken (in the middle !). It looks perfect, but the pipe must move around like mad and the two halves of the bracket vibrate together. Hope it's not been caused by a broken engine mount that causes excess movement ?

My connect has the same problem, (06 reg) sounded a bit like the baffles had gone in the exhaust so had a new one fitted but no different, then was told it was the springs in the drive plate so had a clutch kit fitted (solid flywheel on mine) and still no different, no brackets broken or heatshields rattling anywhere!

Just going to run it and not worry about it but it is frustrating! :(

I'd go a run and get a passenger to move around in the van and listen at different places even putting their ear to the floor, sides, doors, footwell ect to try and better locate the noise.
Its very frustrating and once you become aware of a noise you notice it more and more  which reminds me that my n.s ply side is creaking and needs attention

Just noticed mine rattles on acceleration just under 2000 rpm. It sounds like how others have mentioned, springs loose in the clutch perhaps.

Driving around today I noticed that a cassette (yes cassette) in the player rattled at the same time as the mysterious noise did, so I think someting definetly loose and ressonating, whether it be springs, brackets stones we have yet to find out. Many thanks.

Noise sorted, yes it was loose springs in my clutch.
Many thanks.
