Clutch noise - availablity of gear box bearing kits

Postby lobie81 » Tue Jun 09, 2015 11:34 am

Hi all,
My in-laws' Transit is making some noise from the clutch/gear box area when the clutch is engaged. It a 1997 Transit with the 2.5TD 4EB engine and a 5 speed manual box. The obvious culprit is throw-out/thrust bearing. So we're looking at putting a new clutch kit in it. They seem to be readily available in Australia through ebay. My question is, while we're doing the job should we look at replacing any bearings in the gear box? Further to this, are there bearing kits available for these gear boxes? Or would it be a matter of pulling the old bearings out and matching them?

Secondly, how crazy would it be to tackle the bearings in one of these boxes? Obviously it's not beginner stuff, but we're pretty handy with the tools and have worked on this type of thing before.

Finally, we have the Haynes repair manual for this model. But are there any exploded diagrams of this gear box anywhere?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would this kit be suitable for the gear box?http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121203640882

And does this manual cover the correct gear box? http://www.super7thheaven.co.uk/wp-cont ... 5601gb.pdf

Thanks again

So we're looking at sourcing a reconditioned gear box at this stage. I've contacted the local go-to places. Will see how I go.

i would check the clutch 1st, you want the "proper" low lift clutch & this eliminates a lot of the gearbox "chatter".

OK. So how do I identify a "proper" clutch. Does that mean the genuine one only?

For the record I've been able to find a supplier with genuine Ford clutch kits for about $530AUD. Does that sounds reasonable, and is genuine the way to go?

Thanks again.

I would go for the "ford" clutch which i think is made by Sachs ? the pattern ones used to bad for judder/noise etc they may have improved ? i would have thought if the bearings were knackered in the box you would get noise when driving & extreme case oil leaks, dont forget to check the spigot bearing there prone to failing

I have never replaced a clutch on a Mk3/54/5 (petrol or diesel) using a "Genuine Ford" clutch kit (wouldn't pay the price  ) also I have sold plenty of kits (LUK. Vanfit, CIS etc) to members on here and have had no reports of any problems (judders or otherwise) with any of them :)

Of course a new clutch will have a better, more "aggressive" bite that may highlight wear in any other component (propshaft centre bearings, spigot bearings) so its worth considering changing these while you're on (certainly the spigot bearing in every case as this would result in the box having to be removed again to change it afterwards)

A decent quality "warranted" kit from a "Big" named manufacturer will cost anywhere from £70 to a £120 here in the UK...."New old stock" (without a warranty) can be got for around £40/£50 (that's the stuff I buy/sell/use) and as said above...no problems so far (not for the last 10 yrs or so) :)

thats why i put "used to" glad they have improved, there didn't "used to" be much of a price difference between the Ford clutch & a pattern part ,
All i know is MT75 gearboxes "used" to suffer from bad chatter on tickover & the pukker clutch which was updated a few times eliminated the noise, the early ones also "used" to try & select 2 gears at once normally ending up with the clutch centre plate destroyed  but thats another subject !

Thanks for the responses, guys. Yes, we are planning on changing the clutch plates and throw-out bearing as well as the input bearing on the front of the gearbox. We're also thinking about having a go at replacing the main shaft bearing inside the back of the box, depending on complexity.

Which bearing are you referring to when you say spigot bearing? Can you tell me which part it is on the attached diagram?

Also, are these standard size bearings that I should be able to source from a bearing supplier? Or are they a specialist item?

Thanks again.

Spigot bearing isn't on the above diagram (it fits in the end of the crankshaft).......

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Transit- ... 7736&rt=nc

Not sure of the sizes of any of the MT75 "internal" bearings but they can be obtained individually or as a rebuild kit from the above (and other) "Specialist" suppliers

It supports item 47  to replace the gearbox bearings the box has to be dismantled ie mainshaft/layshaft out which "used" to require pullers etc

OK. So is the spigot bearing different to what I call the throwout bearing (or clutch release bearing) that comes in most (all?) clutch kits? eg.http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261645685875 ... EBIDX%3AIT

Yes that's correct :!: as said above it supports the end of the input shaft at the "engine" end
Its an often ignored bearing when it comes to a "clutch change" but its important in that it keeps the end of the input shaft running straight and true (when worn out it can cause clutch vibration/noise and places undue stress on the input shaft bearing inside the box) at £6 to £10 its worth changing it whenever you fit a new clutch

As usual, you guys are on the money. We pulled the gearbox and clutch out and the spigot bearing is cactus. It fell to pieces when we took it off. The rear engine seal is also leaking a bit.

So we'll replace the clutch, spigot bearing and engine seal and fingers crossed it should be all good.

Thanks again for the assistance.
