smiley MT75 5spd gearbox --> fastidious replacement advice

Postby 97transit2.5D » Wed Jan 11, 2017 10:55 pm

Hi guys, wanting to spend wisely but am fastidious in refurbishing transit gearbox.

option 1: get a gearbox company to refresh my gearbox in a 190 HB smiley 2.5 non turb 1997 ....use parts from another one plus two others i have found

ASSUMPTION: the lengths of other MT75 gearboxes that come from similar year transits ,and mounting points the same, for all the gearboxes taken from the other (ie smileys with SWB or LWB, 150 or 190 or what have you??)
perhaps coupler end is larger or different but can be replaced, yeah?

My gearbox works but planning for when synchro or cones stop functioning, as for the past 12 years been hard to put it into 1st gear ( cone or sychro wearing problem)

and it has a crack in the bell housing conneted to the rear main on the engine.

Can anyone recommend mt75 transit bearings sets (not chinese thanks) and clutch plate sets that are good quality.

option 2: getting a fully refurbished one on a swap basis where supposedly they use good quality seals and bearings.but is more expensive option.

Is 1st gear difficult to engage all the time? If only when gearbox is cold - wrong oil, use MT75. If all the time - you have either a dragging clutch or a spigot bearing gone tight.

yep but I can take off the cracked bell housing and have it replaced with one of three bell housings I have from complete/partial of three MT75 gearboxes i have

thanks about the spigot bearing info...1st gear...i think it does it most times especially when change too quickly ...the oil is correct as it was changed by ford here in chch,nz and they put in somekind of additive

yep dragging clutch....would also be good reason to have the whole gear box refurbished incl new clutch.....

I am also in the process of getting a kit together via ebay with SKF bearings and quality seals.

do you know of the best clutch types to fit to the smiley? i found this for the 190,2.5 mine is DEC 1996

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DriveTorque-S ... SwBLlVMTDS

do you need any other parts???? during the gearing box replacement..... is there a rubber boot or seal to be replaced when have taken off gear box?? on diff??

you may well need a new rear crank seal and gasket. I did mine when I swapped the gearbox. Luk clutches are good I have the uprated 265mm version on mine.
