Weird idle increase 3 seconds after engine start

Postby Tangee » Thu May 18, 2017 8:13 pm

Hello everyone

First post and New Member so here goes...I own a Ford Transit Courier..Did someone just swear?? I understand to the purists this may be blasphemy but i never named it, i just purchased it!! Its a 2015 1.6 TDCI 95 PS Trend Metallic Blue, it is a nice van and it suits my needs, it actually drives lovely and is fairly nippy, its got Alloys, Air Con, Reverse Park Sensors Roof Bars Heated Mirrors And Front Screen, Electric Windows and Mirrors Etc...Yep i know all about the turbo's but i always service and look after my vehicles and i'm always checking round the engine etc, it is still under warranty and before that runs out i am going to purchase a further warranty, here's why! I purchased this vehicle with 1800 miles on the clock, 900 miles later the Offside driveshaft seal on the gearbox went, i had a service and the seal was replaced under warranty, another 400 miles later and i started getting clutch whoop, apparently they fitted a new DMF and Clutch, the whoop isn't there anymore and the clutch does feel better, before these components were supposedly changed i also used to get a lag when i released the clutch from changing gear which caused the vehicle to rock back and forth ever so slightly, it also supposedly had a PCM update...I digress...So another few hundred miles later and the same Offside Driveshaft Seal goes again, back in for a new one, no roughness found on the driveshaft and the recess on the gearbox where the seal seats is fine etc.
The van has done a total of 3500 miles now, i really haven't used it that much per say, however i will be soon, now just today i turned the key to start my lemon up and something seemed different, i'd already been out for a blast doing various things, pulled up at home, nipped in, nipped out, and that's when it happened, so i switched the motor off, allowed it to settle and started it up again, what i'm about to say is what happens 8 times out of 10, incidentally this never used to do it..Upon turning the key and starting the engine it idles relatively quiet for a diesel and then after 3 seconds the engine note changes its pitch and decibels and it feels and sounds a little lumpy, it almost feels as if something is loose, there is no loss of power though whilst driving and it hasn't stalled whilst idling, i thought it may possibly be the EGR Valve sticking.
As i say, it never used to do this and always idled nicely and consistently, granted when diesels are cold they sound and can feel a little lumpy through the motor but this has always been ok and it was at operating temperature when i first became aware of it, im going to ring Ford tomorrow and then take it up there so they can hear and feel it themselves, it has been one thing after another with this van and it's beginning to wear a little thin now, has anyone else experienced this issue?
I tell you what it is close too, i had an Escort Van and when i used to start that up (i know they rough idle) it would be lumpy and then you'd hear the relay click and the idle would smooth out a little, well on my Courier its just the other way around without the relay click and is a new anomaly to add to the growing list of issues i seem to keep having..Many thanks for reading and any replies...Greatly appreciated :)

Footnote, timed it and it's 5 seconds before engine note change, yep, 2 seconds more it's actually getting worse too.

Would I be correct in assuming that this engine is the same as the Euro5 Connect (and Focus!)?
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

OK then, whilst I have 3 vehicles with this engine sitting on my drive, and another 2 in the family, I've not heard of this fault myself, so it may be best for you if I move this post to the Connect section where you should find some more experienced advice

Many thanks, as another footnote it doesn't do it from cold, it was fine this morning, however! there was a horrible smell coming into the van, that eggy rank smell coming through the vents, i was stationary at traffic lights however but even so it was strong and from my vehicle, i was at the front, it has done this before on and off, ive checked around the injectors and can see no obvious signs of anything leaking, i wouldn't have thought the emissions should be that bad coming out of the back which makes me wonder if it could possibly be the start of an issue with the EGR?

Eggy smell could be battery fumes, it might be an idea to check the charging voltage

Why would it do that??

I don't think it is that either...It's definitely coming from the exhaust..That old catalytic converter smell...
