Dreaded mk6 speedo fault

So, purchased a mk6 at the start of this year. The speedo and mile counter has never worked but everything else on the dash is fine. so decided this is the next thing on my list to sort out. I've used what I can from searching this forum but to my despair has no luck. Speedo sensor changed (front near side wheel), still not working. Clocks changed - still not working. All fuses checked - all fine. I'm not sure if the speedo routes through any relays so if someone could shed light on that it would be great. is there also a gearbox sensor maybe? There's also a tacho fitted and the mileage on that doesn't clock.

I have a mk6 rwd 2001. Engine and gearbox are as solid as can be so don't want to let this drag it down. It's not in use at the moment to give me chance to restore it as best as possible. Maybe a related fault but the reverse light has stopped working? Will be changing the reverse switch on the weekend.

Its more than likely bad solder joints on the housing that the plug for the cluster goes into. You can usually confirm this by wiggling the wires or plug and everything comes back to life. If this is the case you'll need to take the PCB out of the cluster and resolder the joints. If you dont want/cant theres a service on ebay that refurbs clusters. £100 last time I checked though...

Reverse switch is prone to playing up on the rwd, mine came back to life after putting the van in reverse then out again several times with the engine off.

Yeah, reading a lot about the reverse switch playing up. Can't seem to locate the Bugger though! Any tips?

Not gonna be easy to wiggle it whilst moving mind. I've tried 2 different sets of clocks so it's deffo not that. I'm more than happy if it is cabling to sort that but I've no way of proving.

Don't see much point in me opening the unit to solder anything, I've tried 3 units now so I highly doubt it's the instrument cluster at fault. I also have an analogue clock with no rev counter: thanks for the response

Is this the reverse switch? Seems to be one bolt but still isn't loose after removing said bolt.

Try sitting in the drivers seat stationary to locate the plug, you'll get used to it's position quite quickly. I fixed my solder joints, its a ten minute job once its out and apart.. before that i just wiggled the wire every now and then.. you said you tried two other clusters? Did you have the SAME problem with those clusters too?

What's your battery voltage like at rest, idle and high rpm?

What does the mileage display show? loads of ------------ or just nothing at all?

EDIT:- never mind i misread your post, i'm guessing you have the non digital clock?

Non digi - both other clusters have the exact same problem, speedo and mileage counter don't work.

I had a feeling this was the case after I changed it. From the info I gathered online it said there was a speed sensor on the nearside wheel. So if there isn't a sensor on the wheel then surely there must be a speed sensor on the gearbox?

Excuse the last post, was half asleep typing that. so I'm assuming the back of the gearbox if you're stood in front of the bonnet? Excuse the noob questions, My first van!

You say your van has a tacho fitted, I believe you cant just un plug them, the link I posted explains about tacho removal and needing a jumper cable, I would be checking that area first before crawling about underneath, if the tacho has been unplugged that might be the problem, if it has plug it back in and see if your speedo/mileage work. N
