Battery connection re split charging.

Postby DanTe » Tue Sep 19, 2017 1:36 pm

Hi everyone last time I visited I had been converting a mk7 mwb 140 to a camper, this is now complete . What I'd like to add now is my split charge kit but having the 2 battery model not sure if I should connect to front (accessories) battery or the rear (engine start) battery. Could someone please advise..

I was advised to fit it to the front battery when I did mine.

Ake told me to do it. :D

Thanks for your thoughts everyone..thinking I'll be going with the front(accessories) battery. Need to find out what measures to take now to eliminate any risks from doing any damage to my solar power setup, I'm guessing it's going to be a fuse inline from the battery to solar controller..can anyone confirm the setup of having solar alongside the split charge setup it's currently fitted with a 15A fuse. Panels are 2 x 110 watt. Once again thank you in advance .

2x 110W=220W=15A@14V. You will blow the fuse every time you are in full sun. Make sure the solar mppt controller is correctly rated for those panels, do not exeed 80% load on the mppt solar controller. If you do not have a mppt controller you need to get one, regular controllers have utter sh*t efficiency wich means you will not get the rated power from the panels. Also have 2.5mm wire, the constant load will heat up thin wires making a fire hazard. Use real copper automotive wire, not that copper clad aluminium rubbish.

If you have a split relay you need to make sure it can sense both sides and trigger when any side gets above 13.2V. That meams the solar will charge the starter battery when the aux battery gets full.

I'd connect to one of the ford provided power points on the rear of the driver's seat.
One of these is rated 60 amps from memory.
mk7 08reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD
mk6 X reg 2.4 T350 LWB MHR RWD - scrapped
mk4 J reg 2.5 L300 LWB MHR RWD - sold on

Notice a trend there ? not too big and not too small

Just to confirm - are you fitting another leisure battery (or more than one) to the existing set up under the seats?

It will make a difference on how you can wire things up.

Also, what does your split charge kit consist of?
