Mk6 running rough and no turbo

Postby onemanpeloton » Thu Sep 21, 2017 1:54 am

Hi all

Broke down tonight and hoped you knowledgeable guys cpuld suggest some simple things for me to check before taking it to the garage

Symptoms:
Idles fine but runs rough when being driven
Lack of power at mid revs. Caused some initial white smoke and then black smoke when i tried to accelerate hard.
Could no longer hear the turbo whistle
Drove fine at 75mph but bogged down at 50mph and eventually stalled and wouldnt start again

History:
Parked up for a week with no running problems whilst i had the rear drum brake off
Battery went flat and cant find a reason for it. Its often left for a week at a time no problem
Green flag gave me a jump start and rough running was apparent immediately.

Thanks in advance if anyone can suggest anything. Recovery man suggested a dropped injector and said it was common on these vans.

Whens the last time it's had a fuel filter ?
Check turbo, take air pipe off and check impeller for wear

No fuel filter change in my ownership (last 8k miles) and only limited service history so will replace it now just in case as im due to do oil and filters anyway

Make sure you get the correct fuel filter there are a few different ones, the wrong one will cause you more problems. N

If you have FORScan / IDS then have a look at the live data from the MAP sensor. This shows the pressure in the air intake after the air has been through the turbo. You can read the sensor in volts or pressure. If looking at volts it should idle at 1.5v and under hard acceleration should get up to around 4v (max reading for MAP is 5v)

You should also be able to check it with a multimeter if you don't have access to live data
