Ex Royal mail

Postby RPWC » Fri Sep 22, 2017 5:02 pm

I am looking to replace my 07 300 swb l r , with the same model, but newer. There are several ex royal mail vans on auto trader and eBay,,all have reasonable miles, are in good condition, with fsh and good MOT. The one thing that puts me off, is knowing the post office,,being an ex employee, the vans have hundreds of different drivers, and if they re anything like the posties round here, they just thrash the vans. Bouncing off kerbs, spinning wheels etc. Should I let the fact that the vans are ex R M ,put me off, amI possibly losing out on a good van just because of what I know?
cheers Rich

I seriously wouldnt buy a bloody bike that had been anywhere near one of those shorts wearing apes ....let alone anything as complex as a vehicle .

Having worked on several ex royal mail vans I strongly suspect the Royal mails staff get a bonus for breaking stuff ...by the time they have finished with it they drive like they have been banger raced .

My current one is ex BT , one owner from new,117k when I bought it, f s h ,now on 124, but starting to get very rusty underneath, hence the reason for sale.

Not much different here....they do have the nuts thrashed out of them.

Limited to 70 mph yes....but they do try their best to get that in each gear.

Personal opinion....pay bottom dollar or look else where. 8)
No Squire, not just any van....it has to be a Mk7 (VM.1) :D

You don’t see many bt vans with bent body work and in general don’t run up and down kerbs every 300 mts half the time they pull up without and takeoff without warning I just wonder how many they get Written off a year

Well tbh if the gpo's van were all that bad I doubt it would take them 10 years to shunt them on or if any of them would even last 10 years ..

I work for the post office and it’s not the fact it’s a works van, it’s the fact people don’t know how to drive full stop. They take a lot of punishment over their life which is true of any delivery vehicle and some drivers, like myself, do drive them properly.
The big problem with the vans is they don’t get maintained as well as you might think, any body work damage doesn’t get repaired unless it’s hanging off or causing an issue so they show dents and scratches. Electrical faults (parking sensors etc.) generally get ignored and never fixed, as do problems with central locking.
Mechanics problems with suspension I’ve found generally don’t get repaired so a lot will have ball joints that are knackered and knocks and rattles all over.
Any van doing multi drops will suffer the same abuse over time, especially if the vehicle is driven my different drivers.
Personally I wouldn’t touch one.

+1 I'd prefer a van with high motorway miles than a multi drop delivery van with low miles, there's nothing worse than that worn out feel :-(

My first transit was an ex BT and I'd buy another one tomorrow, but I'd never buy a post office van

Well fair enough, can't fault mine up to now , I suppose it's like everywhere else bit of a post code lottery to how well their serviced and driven, but other than the minibuses most fleet van get the knickers revved off everywhere they go..

An ex-BT van will, under most circumstances, be in far better nick than an ex-postie....there should be a BIG price difference between the two....buy an ex-BT at ex-postie prices & you'll be laughing, vise versa & you'll be squeeling like a stuck pig.
