Ford Transit 2.5 DI camshaft seal still leaking

Postby transit1160 » Tue Mar 20, 2018 8:17 am

Hello guys,
i need an opinion on my transit oil leak problems. my transit is the mk5 with 2.5DI banana/smiley engine. it has developed major leaks and turns out its coming out from the camshaft seal. i replaced the camshaft seal including the spacer for the seal to seat. i also replaced the o-ring between the camshaft pulley and the spacer. and the leaks stop when on idle and a little revving. however after 10 minutes drive....seems that the seal leaks again but only when driving. if the van is stationary and in idling...its not dripping oil. i have fitted the FEBI made oil seal to the camshaft and it as fitted straight ahead. could the leak come from the fasteners/bolts that holding the intermediate aluminum plate to the engine block? or is it possible excessive oil pressure pushing the oil thru the camshaft seal? really need your opinions on this. thanks in advance

transit1160,I think, the oil seal FEBI is not the best option.
I like the oil seals of VICTOR REINZ.
I do not think that there is high pressure in the lubrication system.
I think that the oil seal itself is incorrectly installed. Perhaps, it is too deeply buried in the nest.
Its plane should be on the same level with nest.

cherniy_chack - i really worried with the age of camshaft seal for this vintage transit. i have a new genuine camshaft seal from the dealer and it was made in 2004. well i believe the mechanic install the oil seal too deep until it leans on the camshaft holding plate. is there any method or any measurement in order to fit the oil seal correctly?

Check the shaft for a "witness mark" as to where the original seal used to be.
Use this as a guide as to where the replacement needs to be seated.

In order not to think about the depth of landing of the oil seal in the socket, it is necessary, together with the oil seal, to replace the camshaft sleeve.

cherniy_chack - camshaft sleeve also been replaced. the initial problem was...its leaking oil when engine on idle. after replaced the seal and sleeve, the problem with leaking during engine on idle solved. but when i drive the transit and on moderate to high rev, its leaking badly. but leak will stop if the engine on idle.

ive just measured the side of the installer & the seal needs to go 9mm into the front case. Are you sure its the cam seal leaking, if it is it sprays oil over the cam belt

ignore the 9mm thats the depth of the installer, i would say if the seals say 12mm there needs to be 3mm (12-9=3) from the front of the seal to the outer edge of the case ? :?

It’s a long time since I’ve rebuilt a di but from memory to fit the seal all I did was knock the seal into the bore with a large socket dowon to the shoulder in the bore this has been on engine rebuilds I have only ever had to change one cam seal once for leaking and that was a fleet of over 100 vans
