Are ANY 6 wheel stud axle diffs front loading?

Postby NeilsTransit » Fri Jul 20, 2018 10:51 pm

G'day to you, I previously asked a question yesterday which contained a serious typo....'all' instead of 'any'. The deeper reason why I'm asking this question is that somebody is selling a LWB Mid roof transit which has a 6 wheel stud axle which I haven't actually seen except by photo so I'm assuming that it originally had the salsibury rear loading diff but in this case the diff has had a 9" Ford diff replacement with a 3.55/1 gear ratio. The Twink 2l engine has been replaced by a Holden V6 engine so now with the 9" diff the ratio suits the V6 power.
So back to my question do ALL six wheel stud single axles have the rear loading salisbury diffs?
But hey what do I know, I'm only a gardener!

In answer to my own question, upon further research it seems that the lighter payload MK5 transits, 120 and 100 models have the 5 stud wheel axle pattern which have the front loading diff in it's own carrier, something to do with Timkin, whatever that means  . All other payload transits have the 6 wheel stud pattern which has the Salisbury diff which has no carrier and is uploaded into the axle from the rear of the vehicle. If anybody thinks this is rubbish please let me know as I'm only a gardener

Only exception to the above is the round tube atlas axles fitted to 1.6 mk3s.

They were rear loading 5 studs

Thanks Minormatt.......On the subject of wheel stud patterns, other day I saw a 4 wheel stud transit and was so amazed I forgot to check the registration and find out the vintage, I don't think I was hallucinating, well not on that day!
