How much does my van weigh?

Postby djswampy » Thu Oct 11, 2007 1:02 am

This has probably been discussed in the past and a search of the forum will prove fruitful in finding the relevant information. I have tried this with no joy (just lots of stuff on the sportvan).
I have a 2.5di 76ps LWB 150 SHR mk5 V reg transit van. My licence says I can tow a car (van) and trailer combination of anything so long as my train doesn't exceed 3.5 tonnes and the trailer isn't more than the car (van).
My question is, how much does my van weigh? I could of sworn it sat on the bridge at the scrappy at 2.2 tonnes with my handful of copper scrap inside. Yet the rating plate says:
Gross vehicle weight (box 27) 3300KG
Gross Train weight (box 26) 5300KG
I am confused and desperate for an answer as I need to tow a trailer at the weekend which will weigh 1 tonne, or have to hire an Iveco van because no one round here has LWB Hi-roof transit for hire.

Looking at the info for what I plan to carry on my trailer, it lists the items gross weight as 975kg, but a kerb weight of 415kg (the thing on my trailer is going to be a three wheeled tipper truck). Would I be right in saying that roughly the gross weight as stated on the vin is the 3.3tonnes fully laden with the 1.5 tonnes payload limit. what I mean is:
3300kg(gross) - 1500kg(payload) = 1800kg kerb weight?

I reckon approximatly 1800KG unloaded
the GVW is what the van is allowed to carry INCLUDING fuel and driver

so

3300 (GVW) - 1500 (PAYLOAD LIMIT) = 1800kg (ULW) roughly

The train weight is what the maximum the van and trailer combination can be (with the proper licence)

Only real way to know is to go on the weighbridge empty BUT wit a full tank of fuel

Motor vehicle driving licence regs are an absolute nightmare. The regulation states for Category B

"Any motor vehicle, other than a vehicle included in category A, F or P, having a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes and not more than 8 seats in addition to the driver's seat, including-

(i) a combination of such a vehicle and a trailer where the trailer has a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 750 kg, and

(ii) a combination of such a vehicle and a trailer where the maximum authorised mass of the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes and the maximum authorised mass of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the tractor vehicle."

If the maximum authorised mass (gross plated weight) of your vehicle is 3300kg, and the maximum authorised mass of your vehicle and trailer (train weight) is 5300kg, then as soon as you put a trailer on the vehicle which is plated at more than 200kgs gross weight (very small, I know) then your maximum authorised train weight will exceed 3500kgs,

i.e, if your trailer has a gross plated weight of 1000kgs (1 tonne) then as soon as you put it behind your vehicle, your maximum authorised mass is 4300kgs (3300kgs for the van + 1000kgs for the trailer)

Basically, you can't tow a trailer other than a very very small one behind your vehicle, with your licence.

Thats what i did :D , go to your local tip with some domestic rubbish. Weigh in then on the weigh out ask what your unladen weight is.
I was quite surprised @ 2024kg unladen

Yes, I realise that now. I read the 'INF30' document last night and thought, the empty trailer is 800kg, the load is 400kg, the van empty is roughly 2200kg on the bridge. total of 3400kg, that's within the 3.5tonne limit. but yes its gross of all the bits. Like the trailer has a max load of 5 tonne or something so its the 5 tonnes plus the 3.3 of the van.

If I did have a licence to cover it though, The van has a max train weight of 5300kg, that would mean then that if the max van weight is 3300kg, I can only tow a trailer of 2000kg max load. Which makes my part owned car trailer useless to me unless I had a 7.5 tonne lorry.

But surely your licence doesn't cover you for a 7.5 tonne lorry either??

When did you pass your driving test by the way? was it before or after 1st Jan 1997?

No it doesn't. I was meaning hypothetically. I passed my test in may 2006. So I only have Cat B on my full licence and B+E on the provisional part (not sure what that part entails). I have other categories but they aren't relevant to this thread.

I am thinking I'll have to get my C1+E licence to be able to do what I require with the trailer.

I'm going to Eastbourne. I know this thing fits in the back of a Long wheelbase High roof Transit. It is the larger version of what I thought there was only one size of. I knew that the smaller size fits in the semi high van that I have but it turns out that this one is too tall for a semi high roof. I've hired a van which the hire place is the same size as a Hi-Roof LWB Transit (I think its an Iveco) so that should solve the issue. The beast I am picking up is this, my 'project'

Damm, van is booked now. Don't like to ask favours and the like because I feel like I am taking advantage. Thank you very much for your offer mate.
