Aux belt tensioner

Postby snake16 » Fri Oct 19, 2007 8:15 pm

Had my 1st breakdown today (55 plate, LWB 90hp, 105,000 miles), the auxilary belt tensioner gave up the ghost & took the belt with it :( . AA were on the spot quickly & went to the local Ford dealer who had parts in stock (that I think, speaks volumes :? ) £84 for the tensioner & £46 for the belt all plus VAT :( :( . Had to have it fixed on the spot & pay up & shut up as I was loaded & had to get the stuff delivered :( The AA man says it is a common fault on Ford cars esp Focus

The only broken part of the tensioner was the bearing which I am sure I could get from somewhere (not Ford 8) any ideas anyone? ) at far cheaper than £84 +VAT. I will now rebuild the old one & keep it as a spare as I expect to run the van to double its milage so I will replace it as a matter of service in the next 100K.

The reason for the thread is to advise anyone with a 100K + van to consider chaging the bearing to save on £153.27 :? :? :? :? & the inconvenience of a sudden, unexpected breakdown 8)

Done mine a few months ago, before any breakdown

Don't forget to change the bearing in the idler pulley aswell, same bearing as the tensioner. I think it cost me about 14 squids for the pair.

Oh, and i changed the belt at the same time, 12 of my English pounds from X part. Just to rub it in and all that  :P :)

That's the problem with that belt, it drives the alternator, power steering, vacuum pump (servo brakes) & water pump. You aint getting far with that lot not working :?

No worries  It does help that i'm a mechanic and learn from other peoples unfortunate incidents 8)

Got the bearings from a local bearing suppliers, they even had them in stock which was a first for them! Can't remeber the size but i do have the old ones in my tool box somewere if you can wait till tomorrow.

Tensioner and idler pulley bearings the same, if one has failed then the other is close behind.
Simply knock out, knock in new bearing max 10 minute job.

While you have the belt off it will be worth checking for play/looseness on other turny bits inc.
Fan bearing.

Just note how belt goes by drawing it down prior to removal

"Just note how belt goes by drawing it down prior to removal"

Interesting that you say that  The AA man was just about to remove the remains of the belt when I suggested that he made a note of positioning, no problem he says, I have the data on my laptop 8) So when he gets back with the parts, he fires up the old laptop & yep, you guessed it, info on Transits to 1999 model only :( :( :( Extra 40 minutes trying to work it out :? I think he was a tad embaressed :?

Oh hell, been there but he should be used to how belts go, I usually draw it down but if a belt has snapped it dont take me more than 5~10min, guess you get used to it at some point

mine went yesterday :( my van has two short belts though, as u look in from under the bonnet the power steering is on the right with a short belt running round it and the alternator is on the left of the engine with a short belt running round just the alternator and the crank, it hasnt got the long belt that everyone else is on about, anyone know why?

No, as usual I didnt keep a note of the numbers but easily removed at bearing place, detension belt and remove the idler pulley (top center) (13mm socket) easier with the top front trim panel removed, 3 bolts, 1 left 1 middle 1 right, max 5 minute job
