Airbag Light - Mk6

Postby davemfox » Thu Oct 25, 2007 1:34 pm

Hi,

My 75 PS Mk6 has a flashing airbag light. It does 5 flashes then has a 4 second gap then does another 5 flashes etc.

Does anyone know what this means?

Thanks,

Dave

Mine does it too

Bought the van without the airbag bulb in clocks (was assured it was in full working order) replaced the bulb at a cost of £14  b*stard just flashes  removed it

It dosen't solve the problem but it no longer drives me up the wall :D

Hi m8

Can you re check the flash code?

There is NO published reason for flash code of 54.

Check all the the fuses, to ensure that there isn't one in the wrong place.

The other possible is that the crash memory of the module is full and it's flashing out any old twoddle, if this is the case the only cure is a new restraint control module.

All fuses are in the right place and have not broken.

The flash sequence is definitely 5 on and then a 4 second break (could be a 5 second break as it is actually 4.5 secs).

Do you have the part number for that module as my local Ford place couldn't it?

I misread your opening post

All flash codes on 2000 -> transit are 2 digit.

Please advise as to exactly what the light is doing

ignition on.....light on constantly for 5 secs, then 1 flash ...2 sec light off......5 flashes in succession

that would be code 15, meaning that the drivers air bag is shorted

but there is also a 35 which means that the passenger airbag resistance is low.

Before you say you don't have a passenger side bag, the wiring is there with a special resistor fitted into the plug near the fuse box behind the dash.

Ok, ignition on all idiot lights come on and glow for a second or so, engine starts then approx. 17 secs later the airbag light goes through it's flashing sequence.

Here is a video that I shot of it....

You need to get this vehicle on to IDS

The airbag system is fubar !

The system should light the SRS warning light constantly for 5 seconds or so after the ignition has gone on, Your's isn't doing that.

The flashes also look too long.

Ok - I tried something different today

I took all the idiot light bulbs out of the dash and reseated them. Guess what?!?! That light flashing sequence has now gone and the SRS light stays on for the length of time it is supposed to, and then it gets into the flashing sequence of - three flashes, a break and then two flashes...

Again the video link is here (it's a smaller video this time  ) - http://www.mediafire.com/?9hkltymiu4l

So what does that mean then?

Nighthawk - did you have a chance to look at this? Any ideas on what it is and what I need to buy to fix it?

Cheers,

sorry m8, had a hectic week and have only just found this again.

32 is a high resistance in the clock spring assembly.

Thats going to need a new one I'm afraid. Removing the Air bag assembly from the steering wheel CAN be a dangerous operation.

You need to ask your local ford parts dealer for a clock spring.

Fitting ......

Put the road wheels in the STRAIGHT AHEAD position

disconnect the battery and go for a brew
remove the 2 plastic covers from the rear of the steering wheel to allow access to the air bag fixings, remove these bolts and pull the air bag away from the steering wheel. Disconnect the air bag and horn wiring.

store the air bag in the REAR of the van with the ford badge UPWARDS

remove the grey covers from the steering lock housing and disconnect the 2 multi plugs from the base of the housing (look at those on the new part)

Disconnect the switches by pressing the release tabs and pushing the switches upwards, you can leave the wiring in place

Now remove the steering wheel, undo the center bolt 3 turns and grasp the steering wheel and 3 and 9 and pull the wheel firmly, they are usually quite tight, so give it a good pull and try 6 and 12 too, in some cases a puller is needed !
Once it's loose remove the bolt and put the wheel to one side.

the clock spring is secured to the steering lock housing with small tabs, lever these and it'll come away.

Fit the new assembly and ONLY then should you break off the RED centering tab

rebuild in reverse order really, making sure that the steering wheel goes back on it's MASTER spline and that the bolt is tight.

Hope it helps
