yes Smooth hound what you have told me is interesting and well explained. What you told me can be true since when I turn off the engine it would do so with a judder shaking the van violently.
Today I have fitted a non return valve, cleaned a jet like component that goes from the injection pump to the return pipe (there is like a valve ), added a washer to the lift pump because it had been instaled without it, and opened a valve which is located in the injection pump where the pipe from the lift pump is connected. there was a spring and a small bolt which is used as a valve.
BUT in spite of all this , the problem remain.
Also a friend of mine had told me that he had a similar problem on his Ford Orion and it was beacause his lift pipe which is in the tank was short beacause of the petrol to diesel change of engine. Is it likley to be the problem? IS the petrol tank higher in its height more than a diesel tank? therefore I sholuld try and extend the lift pipe by conecting a pice of flexible diesel pipe.

if i am to go by your first post then i would find it unlkely to be the tank that is the problem, although a deisel tank is different to a petrol one in the sense that it is designed so as not to pick up air when the fuel is low, so you could ensure that its not that that is the cause by making sure you are at least half full, this would cause it to stop, or at least lose power for a second or 2, but it wouldnt make it race. i also cant see it being the pump as i dont think that would make it race, but i am not certain of that..

hi today I went to my friend who have about seven transits or so ( there is a topic Karmnu's transits in the non member section that is about him) and told me that the problem might be the tank because it have sheet metal compartments that might be broken loose and are causing diesel to shake violently in the tank.
Could it be the problem??
also I when I removed the tank and washed it there was a noise of a clanging sheet metal which I didn't noticed very well, so I m going to replace the tank and try again.

smooth hound I m just giving the blame the fuel system because when the tank is full it doesnt rev once. But thanks for your advice it could also be.

And about the vibration, can't it be because the previous owner had given bio diesel to the van? because I found that lucas pumps are not suitable for any bio diesel or veg oil since it damages its main rotor. Can it be solved by giving some fuel tratment (Slick 50 )??
Thanks every one

yes a deisel tank is divided, as in it has a ection around the outlet, that makes it so that when you are low on deisel the outlet is always in the deisel so as not to pick up air, but i think that if you are half full then that should not occur, and if over half full then it certainly wouldnt happen, and i still cant see how it would make the engine race any way, but saying that im not saying it wouldnt, just that i would be surprised, there is no reason why you shouldnt give it some treater, i think forte is the best, and i would put it into a new fuel filter and put that on the van, that way you wont bring up any more sh t out of the tank, i suppose it could be veg oil use, but i dont think it would race again, but if it is veg oil damage then i would be looking at the pump, i dont have a lot of experience with lucas pumps so cant really say what reaction veg oil damage would do to it, but if you are not having trouble when the tank is full then it must be something to do with that. f i were you i would change the fuel filter put forte in the new one, and keep your tank fullish , rive it like that, if you dont have any problems then then i would either just top it up every 150 miles so never to get too low, if then after a few days or however often this has been happening before , you havent had a problem then its not what i suggested or the fuel pump. that will certainly wittle it down a bit as to the problem, but i wouldnt change anything apart from the filter until you have ruled them out
good luck anyway and dont forget to let us know how you go. i am away for 2 days tomorrow , so wont be able to assist, or hinder  you

one more thought, its highly unlikely, but worth checking, rev your engine a bit by pushing the bit on the fuel pump that revs it, then check that the revs go down when you let go straight away, just to make sure your cable isnt sticking a bit on occasion, as i say its not likely to be that , but worth illiminating any way.

Hi about my problem it still not resolved, But may I ask a question which is about the ford escort mk4 because I ve got a friend owning an escort mk4 with a 1300 pushrod engine
he bought an Xr3 dash with revconter to replace the old one with time clock. Any one have an idea how to fit the rev counter since there are no plugs and wires for it??
You can send him ideas on (stegra@onvol.net) since he's not a member here but a great ford adict :D

Hi since the last time I changed the fuel tank with another one and checked that with the tank its every thing ok. But the problem is still there, rough engine running and reving alone.
I think that it the injection pump which I have to deal with. If it is so, is it more worth it buying a new or used one than reparing ? because here in Malta the diesel specialist work is quite expensive. And if its biodiesel damage would it be enough to change all ruber/ washers parts? I will try also to ask some diesel specialist about this.

hi to all , its now been a long time from the last post here.
For what was the problem of uncontrolled revving I eliminated it by changing the injection pump.
Now the reving is eliminated but, when reving and removing the gas suddenly the engine will go back under the idle speed that sometimes it stop running especially when the tank is about half or less full. does this imply that I have to fit an electric lift pump?? Also when I bought the injection pump I had to buy a di mechanichal lift pump with it which I have no place to fit in the cam shaft!?

Were the two injection pumps the same make? I have never heard of an electric injection pump for the DI, it doesn't need one. Your problem could be worn piston rings, with the engine running on it's own oil, but it's rare.

yes the same make the injection pumps both lucas Cav. No it is not an electirc INJECTION pump , I said An eletric LIFT pump to help the injection pump bringing diesel from the tank.
NO worn piston rings because the engine have high compresion

Sorry misunderstood you. Either way I doubt an electric lift pump would help, let alone if one exists for the Di, as they were all (up to the late 90s, after that I don't know) built with mechanical lift pumps.

Hey look, does someone here knows from where to open a little bit more the diesel for a Lucas CAV injection pump??
Is it under the blue cap piece where there is the seal ?
Because since I have installed the pump I noted a great difference in engine strenght.

Re: DI DIESEL PROBLEMS

Postby i_support_no_team » Sat Mar 28, 2009 5:17 pm

I have a problem with my R reg diesel ford transit van. I see in earlier posts people asking if the OPs van runs smoother with a full tank of diesel. My van has a problem when Im full or half, even quarter full, but once i go under a quarter of a tank it doesnt seem too bad.

My problem is a lack of power, I seem to pull away normally but once I get to 15mph or thereabouts it seems to tug and not accellerate like it normally would.

It will then only get up to about a top speed of 50mph. If I run the diesel down to below a quarter of a tank, I dont get the problem and can reach 70mph quite normally. I have now begun to not put more that £10 in at a time so that I dont have the problem but this is no use if I need to go a bit further afield on the motorway as my confidence has gone if I fill up with diesel.

Anyone got any ideas please?
