water pump leak

Postby James H » Wed Feb 20, 2008 7:09 pm

Hi all,

My deisel P reg (97), mk5 transit has recently started leaking coolant from the water pump, Ive got a replacement pump and looked at the haynes manual and it tells me that it is necessary to remove the radiator to replace the pump. was wondering if it is really necessary to remove the radiator or if there is a way you can do it without having to do this.

Thanks in advance for your replys

Its not at all necessary to remove the rad, it just makes cleaning the block easier after removing the pump, but I havent removed one for years

i done my mk5 water pump yesterday, take the rad off, it is easy to do an makes the cleaning etc easier, u can also give it an the engine a good flush to get rid of a good bit of rusty colour!! plus do the timing easier.. heck it almost made it a pleasurable job an took me an hour an half to do it slowly!

Too right. Changed my pump recently and removing the rad makes it so much easier and i bet its quicker especially if timing cover bolts are tight!

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm thinking I should probably replace the timing belt as well then as it is most likely been contaminated with coolant. Is this something that you think can been done by a novice such as my self or is this a job for the a garage.
