wheel bearing replacement

Postby koondaholaa » Tue May 27, 2008 1:04 am

hey i have 1993 2.5 diesel transit . i need to probably replace the left front wheel bearing > anyone can tell me if you need special puller tool and if i should replace both sides ??
is there a danger the front wheel can seize on me while driving right now ???

i read the earlier post it mentions using chisel to knock the bearing of the axel and socket to guided back >is that all ??

thank you very much

Funnily enough, I've *just* done both my front bearings (along with the discs - since they'd delaminated with rust). You need no special tools, simply undo the stubaxle nut, pull the hub off. There's enough 'land' on the inside of each bearing track within the hub to chisel the things out. New tracks went in very smoothly with a socket and a lump hammer. Getting the oil seals in square was the biggest challenge, after many, many attempts I took a beer break, came back to it and they went in smoothly 1st try with a 40-something socket.
Beer was a pint of Hicks 'HSD', slightly below ambient temperature, left to stand for 10-15 minutes to de-aerate.

Yep, usual story... unbolt the caliper from its leg mounting (leave all the hydraulics hooked up, don't disturb) and hang it out of the way. Good time to twist and inspect the hoses, pads and all that stuff while you're there.
Disc is bolted onto the hub. No reason to remove the disc, so if it's OK, just go ahead and knock out the bearings.
