EGR valve 2.4 duratorq defender

Postby Verdone » Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:47 pm

Hi all,

I have a small question, i own the new defender with the ford engine ofcourse which comes out of a ford transit van

I have now 23.000km on it and i had a rumbling noise when idling or not driving fast

So i blanked of the egr but now the engine management light has come on? Is this normal when u blank it and how can i resolve it?

oh and blanking it off resolved my issue so it actually worked except for the small problem above :|

Thx Verdone

Well what you have done is meant to bring on the fault light.

There are reports of people who did exactly the same as me without the engine management light :?:

Can i shut it off permantly for the egr fault, not for any other faults that may come on

you cant blank the EGR on the TDCi, it uses the airflow meter to measure the ammount of exhaust gas being used, and blocking it as you have found out puts the engine light on

Best bet.......stick a 300tdi in there

Or get it looked at under warranty because if anything else go's wrong and the dealer notices what you've done you'll be stuffed

True its not great to do this under warranty, but in sense by blocking it off i cant damage the engine right  :?:

But if other problems not related to the egr arrive i will put the normal gasket in, only a 30 minute job if all goes well

having a tdci mondeo (tdci 2.0 130 6 speed) these problems are quite common

if youve blanked off the EGR and it has a sensor on the EGR you need to drill a 5mm hole in the blanking plate

this allows sufficient air to pass to fool the ecu, but doesnt allow the EGR to open.

ive run my mondeo with the EGR defeated (no sensor version) with no problem, and no smoke...

the EGR on the mondeo (cant speak for the transit cos ive not looked yet) simply allows used exhaust gases into the boosted inlet airway on full throttle, removing the small vacuum pipe to it defeats the valve working at all, but plug the pipe too.

The 5mm hole is a good idea, & i have heard from a ford lady that it works well, but better still ask a company called Allisport for advice , they make an EGR defeating device specifically for the TD4 2.4 Defender 90 that you have, it looks like a trumpet which installs at the end of the EGR outlet, rather than a "gasket with no hole " that you probably have fitted so may address your issues. As to whether all egr blanking plates needs a hole in, it varies between vehicles, it may work OK but may not , try it & see...

PS - i dont blame you for wanting to avoid the "warranty", my customer in Essex that has had his TD4 Defender 90 remapped has had the same rubbish , time wasting , "warranty support" that many ford van owners on here have experienced.
