Handbrake adjustment

Postby IB » Wed Jul 30, 2008 10:54 pm

On a 94 transit how do you adjust the handbrake, is it the threaded screw in the linkage underneath ( which is seized) or is there another adjuster elsewhere?

Thanks

Adjust the back brakes and you will almost certainly find the handbrake is more than acceptable

The adjuster is the long barrel nut with the two lock nuts either side It sits just infront of the horse shoe. Watch out the rear one is left hand thread! I've seen these stripped before. They are prone to being seized but there are small holes in either side of the barrel nut to lube up before any real force is applied. Heat helps too

The adjustment is actually on the shoes.

Adjusting the cable, the brakes them selves are adjusted on the brake adjusters.

Sorry i thought the long barrel nut was to adjust the handbrake, i always de adjust it fully then pump the footbrake so the auto adjusters are set then turn the long barrel nut clockwise to achieve handbrake adjustment is this correct ?

That is the procedure, but when you are tightening the cable you aren't really adjusting the hand brake you are achieving the correct adjust of the cable once the brakes are adjusted correctly.

So should IB leave the long barrel nut seized ? what if he takes the brake drums off & finds the handbrake arms not sitting correctly then he cant manually adjust the shoes, in his position i would remove the handbrake adjusting rod by knocking the 2 clevis pins out (correct descripition?) place in a vice and free off or replace if neccessary, while its off pump foot brake to achieve correct adjustment of brakes refit rod and adjust for desired handbrake adjustment.

The problem 99.9% of the time is that the shoes dont adjust properly, AND people rarely clean/adjust them anyway, so one day joe bloggs thinks his handbrake comes a bit high and decides to adjust the cable taughtness, thinks he's fixed the problem...and really all its done is sent the shoes out of adjustment! The only time the handbrake cable adjuster should be used is when replacing the cable! after which it should never need touching.
