Hydraulic pump on a tipper

Postby seanm » Wed Jan 07, 2009 2:41 pm

i have a 2000 w reg 350 tipper i think its a mk 6, for some time the hydraulics have been a bit slow then the other day the back started to go up very slowly then stopped i lowered it then it would not go up at all i could just here a clicking noise like a solenoid, there was only 700kg on the back so it wasn't overloaded, i've looked at the wiring everything seems in place, there is fluid in the tank, does anyone know if it is feasable for me to try and repair it, ie is it something i could change easily, or does it require specialist knowlage, or is it easier to replace the whole thing, thanks.

check the wires on the battery and isolation switch as they can corrode if all ok there then take the cover off the solenoid usually on the motor pack and make sure the connections are good there....

As suggested, check main battery cable/connection where it should go to what looks like a starter solenoid.

Clicking sounds like solenoid working but not actually connecting main power to motor/pump.

colud be solenoid contacts internally or just poor connections.

If you get stuck I fitted one of these to a friends tipper when his gave up.
Not a bad price for a new unit.

Check the solenoid connections.

If your hearing a clunk off the solenoid, then it sounds like the coil side of the solenoid is ok. Get a test lamp / meter over the bigger terminals and an earth. You should have 12V at one of the terminals with the isolator on. If not, the fault is upstream of the solenoid. You can test this by carefully putting a jump leads on the motor, and seeing if it runs.

If you have 12V on one of the larger solenoid terminals, put your meter / test lamp on the other side, try and send the body up, if the light comes on or the meter shows 12V, the solenoid is ok, and the motor is faulty. If this is the case, give the motor case a good couple of hits, and see if it works then. (worn brushes).

If there's no power on the other terminal, and the solenoid is clicking, the solenoid is goosed, there about 20 quid depending on the size of the motor.

thanks for all the suggestions, i stripped the motor and indeed it was the carbon brushes that were worn, after a lot of looking on the net i have found a supplier for brushes and i'll fit them tomorrow, again thanks to everyone it has saved me a lot of money.
