Can i lock my van from outside and leave it running

Postby The Lone Wolf » Tue Jan 13, 2009 8:49 pm

Can i start my van.
Get out of it and leave it running.
Lock it with the remote keyfob.
Come back to it and open again with remote fob.

I like to start up and demist the screen / warm the cab before taking off.
But would rather be in the house making me sarnies while its demisting / warming.

No,not with fob it doesn`t work while ignition is on i`m sure.

You could with key......

Bearing in mind someone can pot the window & steal keys or whole van.....
S`pose it depends where you live but someone also said years ago it`s illegal to leave a vehicle running like that, don`t know how true it is.
Some jobsworth told me while i left car running at minibank,8 feet away & with our gert sat in car

Reminds me of a mate of mine, he's in his 40's and still lives at home with his mother, she's in her 70's still does all his washing/cooking and when cold weather/frosts forecast she gets up especially early to start his car up and make sure its defrosted and nice and warm for him.

i do have a way of leaving your van running but with no key in the ignition but you won be able to lock the van.

which dosent matter as your steering lock will be on and as soon as someone releases the hand brake the van cuts out and cannot be restarted without the key.

i have done this to my van as i leave it running whilst im using the hoover powered by my invertor.

its very easy to do you just need a reley ,hefty switch, in line fuses, some cable and a switch on the hand brake.
formally grey van man.

You can buy a kit that does just that, emergency services use them & i`ve fitted about 30 to council vehicles with taillifts.
Does same as you say, fire it up press a button then remove keys.
Has h/brake wire,i use the mondeo h/brake switch. If van has tipper with box near radio (VFS body) there is already a h/brake switch fitted :D

I guess this kit is fitted to cherry pickers too, my next door neighbour works for the council street lighting dept, and in the cold weather he starts up his Merc Vario, (great fun at 6.00 am at the weekend) and leaves it to warm up.

Sounds like a NO then.

What i will do is.

Start it.
Open drivers window.
Get out.
Lock it with remote fob.
Leave it running for about 15 mins (about same time it should normally take to warm cab)
Try to open it again with fob.

If it don't work,
i'll be able to get in through window !

Will let you know how i get on

i found away i wasnt looking for one thou 2.4duratorq 55 reg rwd jumbo delivering in leicester one night 2.00am done drop off got out van with engine running shut door went to lock gates went to get in van doors are all locked engine running now im b*ll*cks engine running doors locked keys inside phone inside no local phone thounsands of pounds of stock on board no one about due time of day. never a plod about when you could do with one, only one thing to do find find metal thingy smash window which i did (quarterlight) what caused this problem. over a period of time the wiring on the back doors had sometimes became trapped and had kinked causing the central locking to operate so now i make sure when i close the doors i feed the wire in to the proper place (bad design) also the wind catches the doors causing same problems (trapped wire) no magnets to keep doors open (another bad design). while im at it the times when loading the van i have nearly caught some part of my head on the things(dont no what you call them) that stick out door guides? another bad design

ps if you ever have to smash a window for what ever reason assuming its your own van dont go for the quarter light its more expensive than the side window the only thing is the shattered glass clean up after getting glass out of window runners, winders , etc.
