Old Transit Starting Tips

Postby APSDS » Sat Jan 17, 2009 10:24 pm

Does anybody have any starting tips for me.
My old scrappy Transit 1992 J Diesel when I start it from cold it sometimes starts straight away. another day it takes ages.
Firstly what should I do with the accelerator? should I keep my foot off whilst cranking or floor it? I just cant seem to get it right.
When I firstly turn the key the truck instantly fires but then stops. I go to turn over again and this is when it seems to take a while. I am not sure if I should press the accelerator or not. Im probaly flooding it.
When it does eventually spring to life I does rather chuck out alot of smoke until I get the revs up alittle. Dont tell Greenpeace. Its like a old donky engine starting up.
Of course once its been run alittle everything is fine. No problems
Any tips would be great.
Many thanks.

Always start a upto Mk5 tranny, full throttle and dip the clutch to avoid cold oil drag in the gearbox especially in the cold. J.L.
