MattBlackMinibus - Progress Report

Postby MattBlackMinibus » Sat Aug 23, 2008 1:07 am

I've begun to collect parts for my Minibus project,
so have started this thread.
It's a '99 SWB Semi-High 2.5D.

I use it for building work, transport motorbike projects, and weekends away with the missus and 4 kids, so like many others on this site it needs to be quite versatile.

I have 3 front seats and a row of 3 behind.
The space behind takes tools / materials / bikes / camping gear,
so needs to remain open.

The rough plans is:
To fit water tanks underneath and a fold down sink for washing.
To fit a sound system for me, and entertainment to keep the brats quiet.
To create a 2 berth bunk for me n the missus (kids in a tent  ).
And add a trick loading ramp for the bikes.

Collected so far:
Smoked front repeaters.
Water tanks and pump.
Fold down sink.
Most of sounds.

There so much I need, which I'll have to pick up as and when I find bits cheaply.

Picked up a tent / awning and gazebo today from a local charity warehouse.
Dunno what I've got yet though.
I spotted a large tent sack and an oblong box.
When I looked inside, one had canvas pvc and poles, and the other had tarp and poles.
I grabbed them, offered a tenner, and walked away chuckling.
Somehow I'll try to use it to create an awning for the bus.

Here's a pic of my first mod:
Image

I'll dig my Escort MkII RS 3spoke steering wheel out of the shed soon to go on,
now I know the splines are the same as early Ford.

Looking at Landy Wellers at the mo, having read other posts.
Seems like the cheapest way to get some better looking rims on there.

Will get lots of updates and pics on here as and when things progress. 8)

Re: MattBlackMinibus Project. Wellers on now :-)

Postby MattBlackMinibus » Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:03 pm

Just got my 16" Wellers on,
so thought I'd share a few pics -

Image Image Image

Image Image

The wheels are 7X16" Land-Rover Wellers
Tyres are Vancos std Transit size which came on Merc steels

Wheels - 40 quid on ebay
Tyres - 40 quid on ebay
Re-drill - 50 quid at local engineers
Tyre fit - 40 quid at local fitters
Bigger nuts - 10 quid at local breakers

Sorted 8)

The side door just rubs on the side-wall,
and the tread is just under the arches,
so very happy :D

Next job is to flare the arches.
I've decided I'm going to have a go at flaring the std arches rather the fit anything on.
I want it looking as factory as poss.

Recently fitted twin shark-fin aerials on the front of the roof,
and clear front indicators,
and am really really happy with the changes it's all making to the look of the van 8)

So what size are the tyres?
Lucas Laser 2000/IDS
95 Pre Production DRW TD Highcube
95 Hallmark
96 150 100PS LWB Hi-Top
96 Autosleeper Duetto
06 Mk7 (scrap)
09 140PS T330S 2.2

Yeah, no probs getting tyres.

They're 195/65-16s on there.
I've got two 195/60-16s to go on the front when I wear these down,
but wanted a nice matching set on there to start with.

I ran out of time before the MOT, hence the scabby flaking paint on the wheels.
I had planned to have them bead-blasted and powdercoated black (of course  ),
but the old tyres were getting naughty, so just had to get them fitted up n on there,
which now means a tedious day of rubbing down and a can of gloss black :(
Not as bling as your chromed ones mate, but my budget + time did not allow it.

I plumped for std size tyres so that
a. the speedo will read right, and
b. so I can still bump up curbs like a proper van driver :D

There's a lot more feedback from the road due to having 35% less sidewall than before,
so it's a slightly rougher ride,
but the body roll has reduced (I guess due to the wider track),
and the tyres are quieter than my last ones, which were pony.

Yeah...I can't wait for the next time the van's completely empty of crap,
so I can go avinit round some bends and roundabouts.
Car drivers look so ashamed when you catch up with them through a roundabout

Got round to a little bit of interior work in the evenings last week -

Image Image

and treated the new wheels to a lick of paint and new nuts and lockers -

Image Image Image

lookin better -

Image

Will try to get some fitted pics on later.
A couple of hours work and 40 quid on paint and nuts has made a huge difference.
Well chuffed 8)
