blue smoke

Postby colly 695 » Sun Apr 19, 2009 9:00 pm

Hi all,i have a 96 100l lwb shr smily transit, when i start it cold,it chuffs out a bit of blue smoke, but quickly stops after running for a few seconds.
The engine im told is sound, there's no signs of oil seeping out anywhere, can anybody tell me what is causing this blue smoke at start up,and is it anything to worry about?

cheers Davie

blue smoke generally is not good, usually a sign of the motor burning oil, possibly piston rings or just a worn engine, how many miles do you have on the clock?

can you tell if the engine oil level stays the same over a period or do you have to top it up

You sure its blue and not white??

White smoke at start up is fairly common and nothing to worry about

keep an eye on the oil level, try and get a sniff of the smoke on start up, you should be able smell it if its burning oil

Hi all, could have found the problem, oil level is low,so il top up again and see how it goes must of used alot of oil recently, and the only time you see smoke is at startup,so must be burning somewhere
i am going to look into the stem seals anyway,
keep you posted

What about smell of fumes ? Is it very strong "diesel" and the "blue" colour is clear blue or rather the smell is like burning oil and its blue-gray ?
If the smoke disappear after few seconds it might be about too small dose of fuel and too much air... Are fuel lines OK ? Maybe they catch some air during the start... If this will be about burning oil - in my opinion - the smoke will gone when the engine get wormer (but then it will be not about few seconds - rather few miles) or you will see smoke all the time, depends on the engine condition.

just started it again, been sitting for 3 hours,no smoke at all, seems to be only when sitting all day or night, the colour is definetly blue, allbeit see through light blue, the fumes are strong at first come to mention it,does smell rather much like diesel.
Another idea ive had it to get the injectors reconditioned did this on an escort van last year for £100.maybe worth a try
