The leak off mod as already stated stops air being trapped at number one injector which can cause starting issues and running problems.
If the leak off pipes are cracked they will allow fuel to drain back to the tank overnight causing starting problems and again air being trapped without the mod.
It's normally worse if you park the van uphill. If you're doing the leak off mod, you will need to purchase a coil of leak off pipe anyhow to reach the front injector, so with the left over pipe, renew the small lengths between the injectors and Bobs your whatsit !

Front of engine at left. Before mod is top, after mod at bottom. Red shows blanking tits.

I have completed the leak off mod - but have a question still (just to confirm I have done this right).

1) Non modded - the rear injector fed via leak off pipe to the next injector along and also down to a t junction peice in a set of pipes that were lower than the top of the engine and almost behind the fuel filter.
2) I have now removed the pipe that led to the t peice and blanked it off. .... and then unblanked off the front injector and connected that to the t peice instead (long pipe needed to reach to back of engine)

However, I see that someone commented that you MUST have that from leak off pipe (the new long one) rising upwards.
BUT the t peice it connects to is lower that the top of the engine by quite a way .. so although my new pipe does rise up a bit, it also then drops down to the t piece .... Is this right ?

Apologies - but can someone confirm that I have done it right ? (or is my description a little confusing?).

When i was sorting out my misfiring problem last year i spoke to several diesel specialists (in cornwall, good ones, not the 'specialists' who tell you aload of crap)> they really helped me, and all said the leak off mod did absolutley nothing. i tried it, and i think it does nothing too. one of those myths that it will clear up a misfire problem and air in the system, when really its likely to be perished pipes, injector pump leak, or injector failure causing air to get pushed back into the system.

thats just my opinion tho!

You're not wrong  It's only meant to take away small amounts of disolved air, but the mod does help air collecting and becoming trapped over no.1 injector.

There's no substitute for finding where the air is being sucked in. Best to strategically place pits of clear pipe from lift pump to filter and then to injector pump so you can see where its letting in the air. favourite is the badly fitting filter and filter/ lift pump unions.
If you have trouble locating it it may be the throttle spindle where it goes into the pump, (Bosch) if the o rings are worn it will suck in air.

For what it's worth, my banana engine is still 100% 'stock' (including leak-off caps and EGR) after 12 years and 270,000 miles and it's never faltered for an instant. It's never had any new parts apart from the routine cam belt replacement.
