Starting problems on 07 100/350 Transit

Postby mpg » Fri Jun 05, 2009 1:24 pm

Hello ppl,
My 1st post, hoping for some help.I will try to explain in a step by step of what is wrong so forgive me for not using the proper words.

I own a ford transit 100/350 tipper Diesel.
I get into my truck, turn the key and wait untill the glow plug lights goes out and then i start the engine.
It will start, but the rev counter wont pick up the ref,if i try and put my foot on the accelator,it still wont pick up the ref.
The engine will then cut out.
So i will start again, turn the key, wait for glow plug to go out, start the engine and still the ref wont pick up nor the accelator will not work and the engine will again cut out, this can happen for maybe 4-5 times untill the ref kicks in and then the accelator will work.at this point,i dont need to press the accelator pedal, the engine will start to warn up on its own with out any fuss.
it only happens in the mornings, throughout the day,i have no problems at all,it will start and the ref kicks in stright away,In the last 2 mornings, the ref has started to kick in at the 2nd attempt,so i was thinking it could be the glow plugs,as the weather is warmer now and therefore the diesel is not so cold,i really dont know, just having a wild guess.

Any feeback would be appricated.(sorry for my bad spelling)

P.S I forgot to mention that sometimes, after 4-5 attempts it wont start,it just trys to start but kinda shuggers if that means any sence. Also its a 07 model.
Thanks

EGR may be be sticking open or shut.... When you do finally get going and turn the engine off do you get the Sawing noise.... :?:

Agree with the above but have you had it serviced, if so what oil grade was used in it :?: (we had 1 van with same symptons, went down the egr route, then the fuel relief valve etc etc until we found out he had used 10w40 (might have been 15w40, cant remember now) oil in it and it was to thick to start it from cold, flushed it through a couple of times and he never had any trouble since  )

Thanks guys for the replys,

Once its started,Runs perfect.no noise at all when i turn it off.Just looking at the service book,it was Last service November 07 at 15k,it now has 33k on the clock.I have owned it since Janaury of this year and i should have service it there and then. The previous owner top it up with oil and so therefore i dont know whats type of oil is in it.i havent really drove it much,so havent use the oil inside.

i am going to book it on monday for a service,i Know it needs 1.As for the warranty,i live in dublin, commerical vechiles over here only come with 2 yrs warranty.

Guys what is EGR ?

Thanks again for your replys.

P.S I have a slight engine stumble. Kinda like when the ac turns on and bogs the engine down for a split second.I have no ac.Just thought that this might mean something.I have checked out what the egr valve is and i am thinking thats my problem.

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation and they are a common problem, get is serviced and get it repaired under warranty

Hello Guys,
Just an update.....I have drained out the oil in the Transit because it was black,Before i drained it out,i put an oil flush in and ran it idle for about 20mins with about 10 miles of driving b4 hand.I also put a new oil filter on.I put the recommended Ford oil 5w 30.
I have notice an improvement in the van already having only driven it for 2 miles,The slight engine stumble has now gone and it ticks over lovely.
I'm hoping thats the problem sorted but wont know until tomorrow morning or late this evening when the Engine will be cold,If not then i think its the EGR Valve which i have seen on ebay for 20 odd quid which aint too bad.
I tried a mates Diagnostics tool but it needs software upgrade as it wouldn't read my Van.

I will update tomorrow,Any other reply's would be appreciated.

Thanks again.
