MK6 06 Transit front seat bolts

Postby Geoff Ingle » Tue Nov 17, 2009 6:38 pm

Hi.
I want to remove my passenger front seat, the bolts look like the TORX type.
The seat fixing bolt star size is about 11mm across the star.
Are these bolts special to Ford ?
I have a TORX T55 wrench which is too small but only just, so I purchased a DRAPER T60 (called a "TX-STAR") but it's too big.
I assumed that if a T55 was just too small, then I needed a T60-but no.
Does any know the type and size please. Also, where I can buy one in Maldon Chelmsford Essex area.

Thanks
Geoff

are you sure the t60 is to big :?: did you knock it in , they are a nice tight fit. :?:

if theres any muck in head the the t55 would need knocking in to become tight.

TORX (pronounced "TORKS", rhyming with "forks"), developed by Camcar LLC of Acument Global Technologies (formerly Camcar Textron), is the trademark for a type of screw head characterized by a 6-point star-shaped pattern (in the same way that slotted heads, Phillips, hex socket, and Robertson have linear, cruciform, hexagonal, and square tips, respectively). People unfamiliar with the trademark generally use the term star, as in star screwdriver or star bits. The generic name is hexalobular internal driving feature and is standardised by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 10664. TORX is frequently styled Torx despite the official all-caps trademark styling.

By design, TORX head screws resist cam-out better than Phillips head or slot head (flathead) screws. Where Phillips heads were designed to cause the driver to cam out, to prevent over-tightening, TORX heads were designed to prevent it. The reason for this was the development of better torque-limiting automatic screwdrivers for use in factories. Rather than rely on the tool slipping out of the screw head when a torque level is reached, thereby risking damage to the driver tip, screw head and workpiece, the driver design achieves a desired torque consistently. Camcar LLC claims this can increase tool bit life by ten times or more. Today there are also other solutions, such as the AW type of screw head developed by the Würth group in Germany.

TORX drive system was developed in the Camcar Technical center, located in Rockford, Illinois, USA.

TORX screws are commonly found on automobiles, bicycle brake systems, hard disk drives, computer systems (Compaq uses almost exclusively T15 screws) and consumer electronics. Initially, they were used in applications requiring tamper-resistance since the drive systems and screwdrivers were not widely available; as drivers became more common, tamper-resistant variants, as described below, were developed.[1] Today, TORX screws are also becoming increasingly popular in construction industries.

Camcar LLC developed an improved profile, designated TORX PLUS.

Hi. They are ribe fittings! i poped into paynes the transit dealer in hinckley this afternoon and first off the lad on the service desk said that they were torx but after telling him that torx bits dont fit he went and asked in the workshop to be told that the are a ribe fitting....there are loads on ebay and halfords stock them so im poping into town in a mo and try and find out what size it is so that i dont have to buy the set. :D paul

Well I've always taken them out with torx bits?

Maybe someone has changed the bolts at some stage? :?

Hi again. just got back from halfords and they sell a set of ribe bits for £29.99 but not one to fit my van! the set includes a No10 which is too loose and a No12 which is too big so my guess is its number 11 and it seems that number 11 is only available in the larger sets on ebay. :? paul

you should do it with a t55, pick the muck out of head and knock it in so its tight.
the torx bits are tapered.

arnt the ribe bits different amount of teeth and rounded ends :?

no the torx bits are tapered, you can get muck in head of bolt, you normally have to knock it in to get a nice tight fit so you dont round the bit and head :!:

have a look here ribe bits(polydrive) are different 2 torx.

Even if it was a torx, you should hammer it in to ensure a good fit so the bolt head isn't damaged or the bit it self.
A good ribe bit or set would be quite expensive, just like all other good tools £££'s

Either way, they aren't torx bolts.
