Right, this has got to stop.... Low revving cast iron, manual tappets pile of sh*t diesel vs High revving aluminium turbocharged 16v hydraulic tappets????... Why don't manufactuers just stop dicking about and just make 5w30 fully synthetic oils to avoid any confusion!

COST! Remember the Di takes some 7 litres of oil, that's very expensive if your buying fully synthetic oils!

5W30 fully sythetic IS a better spec oil, NO question!... just don't need it in an old Di!!! If you want to put it in (YOU ARE SIMPLY WASTING MONEY!), don't let me stop you, why not get a chromed oil filter too as these are much better than any other colour!... Not only that, it's not even a diesel oil! only suitable for 'diesels' (unless you buy a specific diesel oil!).

Are you sure that over sized lister engine really needs 5W30 Fully synthetic????

I'd recommend this (though I know nothing!), good condition tight non smoking Di 5w30 fully IF YOU WISH!!! (otherwise a semi 10W40, 5W40 or 5W30?)... higher milage, bit smokey, leaky 10W40 semi or 15w40 mineral... old total pile of crap, not sure how it keeps running ANYTHING! 5w30,10w30,10w40,15w40,20w50.. mineral, semi, animal, vegetable (well, not animal or vegetable!).....Any oil is better than no oil!

Best all rounder 10W40 semi synthetic DIESEL oil, but it's your choice!

Turbo Di, At least a semi synth 5w30, 5w40, 10w40 Fully if you wish!

Finally.... dozens upon dozens of diesel designs often use a monograde diesel oil ie 30w

Basically my whole point is that people have asked what oil to use in their Di, the answer has always been 5W30 Fully?? NO.. There are alternatives, that's all I'm saying!

who mentioned fully synthetic :?: :?: i thought semi was the corecct oil and as it has the right mix of mineral oil and its whats recomended.

does anyone know of any vehicle manufactures that recommend changing engine oil viscosity at a certain milage condition :?: :?:
prob not cos to know the exact condition you would ave to have a full strip down and inspect :?:

Why would they?... that would make the engines sound sh*t!

Haynes manual: viscosity 10W30, Duckhams QXR premium diesel engine oil or Duckhams Hypergrade diesel engine oil...

I believe qxr is a semi (not sure if it was a 10w30?) and hypergrade is a mineral, 15w40, brand aside (duckhams was favoured by haynes, prolly a deal!) it would seem that there's an alternative (NOTE HOW BOTH OIL ARE DIESEL OIL?), as for viscosity, the thinner oil will make the old Di more rattly and if it's worn the oil will ooze out of the gaps faster, more worn.. bigger gaps!, 5w30 was designed for modern multivalve hydraulic tappet motors, not the Di!.. Dare I say, it's too thin?

It's OK getting anal, but when was the last time you changed your brake fluid, or used soft water when mixing your anti-freeze??

All in all, use what makes you happy, I do... I use a semi sythetic 10w40 DIESEL oil, wouldn't say it makes the Di less noisey, but the 2 stroke in the fuel does :)

Have a look here.... http://www.ratwell.com/technical/OilSelection.html

Under Engine wear: All these oil recommendations from VW are fine except they forget to mention one important detail: they are the recommendations for a NEW engine. As the engine ages, the bearing clearances increase and you need to use a thicker oil to maintain proper oil pressure. What's good for your engine isn't necessarily good for someone else's engine simply because of the difference in mileage and actual wear.

Wow, more confused now after reading this :!: The original manual from my late mk5 bus says preferred 10w40, but I'm tempted by the possible fuel and cold starting properties of the 5w30, however there is no mention for the turbo engine. Could I do any damage or increase wear with the low viscosity oil? The van is on 90,000 and runs well (at the moment). Here's what the it says, 5w30 is clearly recommended for petrol model but only for the diesel below 10c. Image
1990 LWB Mk3 twin wheel 190 minibus (My favourite but stolen)
1998 LDV Convoy Ford DI engine but... yuk, yuk, yuk (bought in desperation, sold 2 months later)
1997 SWB Mk5 minibus (Great but small)
2001 LWB Mk5 TD 100ps Minibus (hmm..)
Get me to that gig!

Just backs up what most have agreed over and over again.Diesel 2.5 di needs 10/40 15/40. In uk 5/30 only to be used when temps fall below 10% .Some will try and save face by claiming temp is and has been below 10 deg for a while but in the main uk is normally warmer than 10 deg .
