FWD or RWD?

Looking for a new Transit.
Probably a Mark 6 SWB low or medium roof
Don't know to much about the Mark 6's yet.
Would prefer a RWD as I get the impression they are more durable and easier to work on, but most of the vans for sale are FWD.
Which is best FWD or RWD?

Depends what you want to use the van for, towing and heavy weight are best with RWD

May be tow a small trailer.
Mainly large bulky stuff
Needs to be as easy as possible to maintain.
Advantage of RWD is clutch and gearbox can be removed without engine out?

I find from experience of our mk6 transits that the rwd is a lot more durable especially with multiple drivers but if you are the only driver its not as important. If you are pulling a trailer or thinking of heavy loads the rwd is the best option in my eyes as AKE says

The clutch and gearbox can also be removed without taking the engine out on FWD as well as RWD. Takes little bit longer, not that much in it.

I suppose it comes down to the question if the 2.4 is a better engine than the "Mondeo" FWD jobbie

imo the fwd is the way to go unless you are haveing very heavy loads!
the tdci is the top one most are tddi but 100ps is probly the best all round engine! :wink:

IMO... FWD are cheap to run and keep going on and on :)

Also lower floor in the back - easier to load, more headroom

From experience RWD is good for maintanance: ie.

Gearbox is out in a matter of minuites compared to a fwd.

much better at load carrying

Less tyre ware on the fronts

Fwd has its advantages

namley performance and MPG are better

As has been said lower floor, and an all round 'better' set up for a pannel van.


One thing I will point out a RWD transit is shockingly bad in any hint of snow/ice and even wet grass. well a pick up/tipper is anyway.

The way to look at it you need to weigh up the pros and cons and see what combination will work best for you and the work you need it to do.

The way I see it is

Pannel van (ie the normal transit) = FWD all day long.

Chassis/Tipper/dropside = RWD all day long.

Also one thing to note, if buying a RWD, make sure you dont have the 5.13 "towing" diff.

Its perfect if you pulling a digger round every day. but the lack of anything over 60mph with out the engine exploding is very annoying. Im currently changine mine to a 4.61. costing about £400 but well worth it. Something to definatly take into account with rwd.

It the Mondeo which has a Transit engine, not the other way round

Good point about the snow and ice, my mark 3 is hopeless in the snow. Big heavy engine at the front and no weight at the back!
I am being converted to FWD.

Is the 2.4 in the RWD jobbies related to the old Di at all? I know it is used in new Land Rover Defenders, they had to put an extra bulge in the bonnet to fit it!

And the 2.0 and 2.2 are similar to Mondeos?

FWD Transits are okay in Snow as long as there isn't too much weight in the back


The 2.4 is nothing like the Di, its totally differant, The 2.0 is a smaller variation of the 2.4, and the 2.2 is an evolution of the 2.0.

The 2.0 and 2.2 used in the Mondeos are again variations of the Transit engine

is the 2.4 90ps rwd engine used in mondeos? or what else is it used in? as for anything more than mildly moist thr rwd spins ,in snow there ok once u get them going...but its getting em going !!!!!!
