Mk5 2.5Di grey/blue smoke any ideas?

Postby paleface » Fri May 14, 2010 9:48 am

Hi, new to the forum and hope someone can help.
i've bought a 1996 2.5di transit hallmark stolen recovered from auction. starts reasonably well for a Di but gives out grey/blue smoke from exhaust even when warm, at idle or under load.
thing ive noticed is that the temp gauge only just touches the 'normal' mark. do these engines have a exess fuel cold start?
it's not using oil or water so i'm ruleing out rings and headgasket
i'm scratching my head on this one can anyone point me in the right direction? just so i'm not just changing parts and hoping for the best
just to add its a bosch pump with the pats bypassed

It has also covered a genuine 96k
thanks for your time

just another bit to add is that there is a strong smell of diesel in the exhaust fumes

Try injector cleaner before you go taking it to bits

I'll try filters, fresh fuel and injector cleaner this weekend and see what happens.
****just another point i've forgot to mention is that the exhaust fumes stink of diesel.****

sounds like an injector is sticking. Where are you based? I have a set I took out of my old engine if you want to try a swap.

It may be a bit hit and miss - but you could try running the engine and slackening off one injector pipe at a time - (be very careful not to get near the fuel as it comes out at a high pressure and can easily penetrate skin!)
You may hear a change in RPM with 3 out of the 4 at idle - and see the smoke stop - but very hit and miss!
Have you tried running the engine with the oil filler cap removed? There shouldnt be any fumes blowing out.

I have had it running with the filler cap out and there are some fumes come out kind of thought it was normal for old diesels! the annoying thing is the engine runs great, it doesn't miss and revs well. i just cant seem to figure out the smoke, the pump hasnt been messed with as the plastic anti tamper cover is still intact on the back. I think it will be wise for me to try filters first.

Hi to anybody reading this post,
Fitted fuel filter today and put a treatment through it to. less smoke and it ran brilliantly but the smoke is still there.
The old fuel filter absolutely stank and it wasn't a neat diesel smell (or petrol) im just wondering if there are any tell tale signs of an engine being run on bio fuel or veg oil?
Also i took a look in the inlet manifold its that sooted up Its about half the size!!! so that will be having a good scrub out.
Checked pump timing also and that is spot on. so is there any other ideas about this smoke?? :?
thanks for your time
cheers
