Postby ovlov » Thu Jun 10, 2010 7:23 pm

I got a mk6 85ps
Came home from work no problem about 8 miles parked the van up left it for a couple of hours went to use it and the gear linkage is very stiff, still get all the gears ok but it stiff and makes a clicking noise as it goes into gear any ideas :? was perfectly ok when i came home :?
The clicking noise sems to come from the bottom of gear lever

it will have seized at the selector turret on gearbox, the clicking you can here is because the mechanism at gearstick end is being put under a lot more stress.

very cheap fix, you can get all parts to recon selector on top of box from ford for pennys.

do a search been covered loads, theres other things to do while selector is off.

hey mate i agree with theis guy samer problem the parts required 2 fix this are dirt cheap
just ask parts guy for the bits on top of box very rare 2 be the cable as mines has 250,000 and never had a cable problem
the cable problem is more apparent on the transit tourneo fwd i have replaced the same cable twice currently 220,000 miles

let me no what the fix is if u fix it pal

the selector shaft has a rubber weather seal, this perishes then below that, theres bearings, water gets in past first perished seal, and rusts the bearings and bearing cage, the bearings drop and jam, but also always is stiff if bearings gone, so puts more stress on the grey cable.

the complete bearing and seal is about £1.50 from ford, when selector turret is off gearbox(6 10mm bolts) renew bottom pinch bolt with high strength bolt loctite and spring washer, as thats a common part to either come loose and drop into gears and wreck gearbox casing, or bolt head can snap off and do the same.

well i opened the bonnet and sprayed wd40 all over the turret thing and under it the best i could whilst my friend wiggled the gear lever like a mad man :)

its now loose like stiring a bowl of porridge just like before yay

i wont fix it properly until i absolutely have no other choice ,because knowing my luck something will break trying to do the right thing lol ,and cost more than the vans worth :)

wrong way to go about things imo. you have a problem cos something broke or is about to break! listen to the guys on here and fix the problem now then you will have peace of mind knowing that you wont end up getting stranded at the side of the motorway spilling gearbox oil everywhere(very dangerous!!!) and also costing you a hell of a lot more money!

Got to agree it's not adifficult or expensive repair. It's basically a design fault. There's a bearing top and bottom in the turret, bottom one gets lubricated from the gearbox, top one just dries up! Hour's work £2 parts ,makes sense to sort it now.
