Bosch Fuel Pump Problem?

Postby skyclad » Tue Jun 15, 2010 1:48 pm

2.5 DI Manual Bosch pump. My camper had its maiden long distance voyage (since diesel conversion) this weekend some 250 miles from Kent to Devon. Went ok no problems at all even climbed the 1 in 4 Porlock Hill.!! Coming home on Monday the poor old beast struggled to get up the slightest incline and propmtly stopped at the top and refused to start. The nice RAC man came out bled the injectors and away it went. 20 miles down the road it happened again, this time I was stuck on the side of a busy A303... Waiting and waiting for the RAC again. After a couple of hours a nice policeofficer pulled in and told me I couldn't park there and towed me to the nearest layby. Whilst towing I slipped it into gear and the engine started. By the time the 2nd RAC man turned up the engine was still running sweet. He then followed me to the start of the M3 and suggested that I may have a problem with the pump itself. It seemed to be going ok so I carried on but on the A30. 20 miles down the road it went again. Nothing would get it going this time so recovery home.

Symptoms , erratic running, then dramatic power loss, then nothing, won't restart. Fuel appears to be getting through the filter ok so lift pump should be good (its new)

Sounds like pump? What do you think?

that also sounds like an air leak into fuel system.get some diesel in a jar and run a pipe direct to pump .check all pipes to injectors for any diesel leaks .if diesel coming out air will be going in.

The tank pick up has a filter that needs to be removed (if you haven't already) when converting to diesel

I've just managed to start it with a quick wiff of EZstart. Running fine so I would agree that its a fuel delivery problem rather than the pump itself. Has anybody had intermittant faults with these pumps? Would it be worth my while taking the plug in fuel pipes off and sealing with vasaline to try and stop air getting in? Feel I may have to drop the tank and check the fuel system all the way through. Meanwhile have to change cam belt and do the tappets on my ancient minibus. What Fun.... 8)
