Wheel Offset

Postby Hal » Thu Jul 01, 2010 1:23 am

My TC has the 15" steel wheels from the factory. i want to replace them with something nicer. But I am having a problem finding out what the stock offset is. I get numbers ranging from 40mm to 52mm. Anyone know for sure what the stock offset is?

Hi Hal

I have just fit some genuine Ford Focus alloys on mine not long since and the wheels are 8.5" x 18" with a 52mm offset and work fine. I use 225/45 tyres (tires) which are about as big as you can get under the arches without fouling.
If you went with the same size rims but a lesser offset they would rub the front suspension leg , they are that close.

I run a Dodge Ram over here and i know how important these forums can be if you have something a little bit different from the norm.

Good luck fella.

Ah sorry.

I measured mine from the outside edge rim to the face that sits against the hub and it was 52mm so i assume if you went bigger on the offset the outer edge of the rim would be closer to the arch and the back edge of the rim would be further away from the strut.

Sure they will.

Bear in mind that 18" wheels so fitted will be 4% - 5% smaller than the norm, and running on tyres with a load rating of only 500Kg rather than the typical 690Kg. They'll be fine on a supermarket trolley :P

Offset is the distance from the wheel center to the mounting face. If the mounting face is outside the wheel centerline the offset is a positive number which most FWD vehicles are. The distance from the inside rim edge to the mounting face is called backspacing.

The larger the offset, the further in the wheel and tire is. Problem is that if you use too small an offset you end up rubbing the fender arch but if you get it too large you end up rubbing the suspension or brake caliper (BTDT).

Ideally if I go from a 15x6 wheel to an 18x8 I should change the offset by 25.4mm(1 inch) to keep the tire center in same position relative to the suspension(there is a fancy term for tihis which I can't remember now). Of course I've done this enough to know that the theoretical isn't always possible. That is why I wanted to know the stock offset. But it is nice to know that 52mm ofset on an 18" rim will work although I am leaning toward a 17" rim to get a little more sidewall height.

According to the calculator I use ( http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html ) a 225/45-18 will be 1.9% smaller and a 235/40-18 will only be 0.4% smaller than the 205/65-15's that are stock.

I am probably going to try to find some 17" rims because of the sidewall height on tire sizes similar to the OE 15" tires. The 15" has a sidewall height of 5.2" where the a comparable 17" has a sidewall height of 4.3 and the 18" is 3.5.

I know that I can find 17" tires with the proper load rating even though mine is a "supemarket trolley"

17's are a good compromise,i've got 17x7 rims with 215-50 tyres,rims have 42 offset

Hello Hal,

Nice to hear from you......... the joke about the supermarket trolley was about the risks of using undersized car tyres (215/35/18 - load index 84W) on a 2.3 Tonne van originally fitted with reinforced tyres (195/65/15 95T). In the UK our diesel-engined Connect's Kerbweight is about 100Kg heavier than your 2-litre petrol model curbweight, so the sum's do matter.

Your USA tyre size is 205/65/15 so there must be a gearing difference & speedo recalibrated for U.S. miles. I also see that the GVW is different and the max. payload is a lot lower at 1600lbs - ours is close to 2000lbs :?

@ wilkyd53 the "supermarket trolley" sounds like some of the teasing I am getting from my brother-in-laws. Which I find rather funny since they all drive large pickup trucks and haul less in them than I will in the TC. The US tire is about 2% larger than the UK one. Not sure why, I have been told our final drive ratio is 4.2 but I am not sure about that. I sort of figured it was the 4.06 that I have put in a couple Focuses.

Not only is the specified payload lighter, there is a statement in the owners manual that it is not to be used for towing. Do you know what the tow rating is in the UK since I know that it is used for towing. I think the reason for a lot of this kind of sillyness is that we have a surplus of lawyers (barristers) over here.

@g-man Like your wheel setup, both looks and size. That is what I am trying to find over here. But before i get the new stuff I have to figure out how to circumvet the stupid TPMS system we are stuck with(too many lawers and stupid carowners again).
