mk5 tipper hydraulic pump details

Postby Peter66 » Tue Aug 03, 2010 10:43 pm

We have a Mk5 transit tipper built by Tipmaster as a tree surgeons vehicle - with Gross weight marked as 3500kg with train weight of 5500kg.
The hydraulic pump for the ram leaks oil, and wonder this is the reason it sometimes does not tip when full of tree logs.
Does anyone know the details of this pump, where we can get a replacement etc. any instructions for it in pdf format.

Cheers

Peter

Is it a single cab tipper?

I have a crewcab tipper with an 8ft tipping body, my mates single cab has a 10ft tipping body, but the ram is the same distance from the back of the truck, which means his has to lift an extra 2ft of body at the front.

If he has any weight at the front it wont tip it up, and you have to give it a lift at the front to help it.

He solved the problem by making some spacer plates, I think they are 2 inch box section, and welded them on the front tipper body chassis pads where the tipping body sits, so that it wasnt so low to start off with, as the Mk5s always lean forward, and this seems to help his out.

The ram leaked slightly on mine when I bought it, but it has sorted itself out with use, I dont think it was used much for abit before I bought it and the seals had dried out.

If on the other hand your ram is loosing pressure by leaking badly, and it wont lift with any weight on, then you may need the ram servicing.

Might be a completely useless tired rambling, but might help! :)

As Eggski says, if its a stabilised single acting ram (Scissor type), or a multi stage ram that is set too far back it will struggle at even 1.5T. If nothing is marked on the ram, try and find the body manufacturer or look on the pump unit. Try an agricultural engineers for a seal or find a local specialist online. The hydraulic pump will only fill the ram with what is in the reservoir (hence why 5 stage rams have a bigger reservoir than single stage rams) - if you are really low on hydraulic fluid your ram isn't going anywhere and any air in the system will just compress and do nothing to lift the ram.

Also (like Eggski say) a lot of scissor type rams are set up way too flat at rest position (Mine is) - so they can achieve the max angle possible, problem is it takes a lot more force to get them moving if the weight is towards the cab its like trying to push down a see saw from just off the centre pivot with a fat b*stard on the other seat.

Oh yeah forgot to say my ram and my mates are both multi stage rams.

I think most under body rams take alot of pressure to make them work so any leaks are a problem.

Thanks for the quick replies. Its a tipper with a mid section box - that does not tip, behind the cab for tools.
The heavy load at the back of the tipper box makes sense, as today for exampled loaded it to the roof with logs from a 40ft Eucalyptus tree. Will have to experiment with some wooden spacers. Had to put in about 2.5l of fluid in today. When pushing up body, a lot came out of the filler cap (assume its a breather) but constantly drips.

Interestingly Fluidlink have a picture of a hydraulic pump bottom let of this link - which allows me to understand how they work:
http://www.fluidlink.co.uk/index.htm

Fluidlink mention the Smiths which I think is the make of pump on these 16 year old vehicles.

Any suggestions where to get the RAM/pump serviced ?
Do you think a company that deals with taillifts could do this.
How do we get any air out ?
Cheers

Sounds like you have an 8ft body then, cab, toolbox then tipping body?

You shouldnt have any trouble tipping an 8ft body, I've had 2T + of timber on mine (If any authorities are reading this then please ignore that!) and it tipped fine.

Its probably had a seal go, so get it looked at and she should be ok.

Possibly, are there any agricultural workshops by you?
