advice please on LSD

Postby G40GES » Sun Oct 24, 2010 2:09 pm

has anyone knowledge on finding/fitting LSD to my 95 bus... :?
I commute through the countryside through all weathers and with winter coming, be nice to be prepared!
On a visit to Rougham for their ploughs to propelers weekend, after a torrent of rain for 2 days prior, getting on and of the side was..............................slow!
I thought i was in for the duration when in 2nd on tickover i was sluggishly inching across the site  ... so id like to know if LSD is worth the time effort and the cash, or has anyone any advice to help save me a lot of grief!

Any post read with appreciation!

cheers Gadge :)

Best thing I've found is to just carry a 12v tyre pump and let your tyres down for better traction then pump them up when back on the road.

The LSD''s for Transits are like hen's teeth.

The mk 5 's that have ABS also have traction control which applies the brake on the spinning wheel. You may be able to get a complete set up from a breakers. You will need all the wheel sensors, sensing rings, pump unit, ABS "brain", wiring loom and dash switch etc.

A cheaper option is to gently apply the handbrake if one rear wheel is spinning.

A lsd would not have helped when at rougham..I got stuck myself there as well and had to get towed off.. I had traction control on and both diffs locked and stiff got stuck..

No they dont! Not unless it was specified anyhow. My '95 has ABS and no traction control and I believe AndyG's 2000 van is the same

ABS is rare, traction control even more so!

Was a Heavy Salisbury 6 stud LSD on Ebay a few weeks back unsuitable for you I guess but ultra rare. Relisted twice till someone snapped it up for the list price of 100 quid. By the time they are scrapped most vans are fifth hand at least so most wouldn't know what the axle Vin code means and why would they have a clue on its value. I'm sure you could find one but it might cost you a few hundred in fuel and I doubt if you'd have found one by Xmas.

How ace?

my axle is a (non transit) dana60 3.77 and it stands me at £600 :o but worth every penny

That sounds brilliant..... I think though for the average Mk5 tipper driver the absence of an LSD gives them some gratification as a frustrated wannabe boy racer though, as it will kick out pretty easy if you power it hard and with no power under the hood, its fairly easy to control too....I don't think a 2.5Di has enough power to spin both wheels though.... :(
