Speedometer Not Working

Postby DJ OSKA » Sat Oct 30, 2010 11:35 am

Driving home from work last night, my speedo decided to drop for no apparent reason.
Since then, it hasn't become intermittent or started working again- just dropped out and hasn't worked since.

All of the other gauges on the dash appear to work correctly.

When I turn on the ignition, the speedometer needle does raise up a little bit, like it should do normally, so can't be the gauge.

I also hear the speedometer reading is taken via wires coming from a sensor on the gearbox, but I'm not sure where the sensor is and if its easy to get to so I can make sure the connection is ok, or whether I need a new speedo cable/wire

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Hopefully I wont need a new gearbox (I read somewhere else on here that theres a possibility the sensor gear has sheared off inside) or a complete new wiring loom :-(

As most of you may know,
my van is a 2005 SWB T200 1.8 TDDI with MTX-75 5-speed gearbox

I also put the spindle of the sensor in to a drill just to see if that made a reading on the speedometer and still no luck :? .I have now run out of ideas, did you have any luck getting your speedo to work,if so could you let me know what was the problem...Sorry i cant be any help to you on this subject. I have tried loads of internet search sites and cant seem to find the right solution

Well thats a bugger then.

I aint done nothing yet, but i guess I'll ring my dealer up and see if they can look at it for me...

ALSO- this may be unrelated, but this is the first time this has happened to me:
I came to a junction last night, shifting down the gears, then tried to pull off in second gear as there was nothing coming, but as I put my foot on the accelerator, nothing happened, so I idled out of the junction on bite-point, and pulled up...

No revs as I put my foot down in neutreal- it just sat ticking over...

So i stopped the engine, restarted, and it's been good as gold today.

WTF?!?!

Not happy

I suppose that's what you get when your engine is controlled by a stupid poxy computer and not a solid, rigid, failsafe cable!

It's not very reassuring though!

No doubt it's some stupid bug in the ECU or damp getting to it...

Still, its not helping with the speedo situation!

My 2008 connect did the same thing last night, all other gauges and warning lamps were fine to start with, then the abs light flickered, here we go I thought ! Then the charge light flickered, alternator me thought, I turned off the blower & the speedo started working correct but I noted the headlamps were getting dimmer :-( 1 charging fault comming up :-( tested the short section of loom by the cooling fan, that appeared ok, tested the alternator output and it was at battery volts only :-( what an easy job to replace the alternator :-) remove the battery terminals, remove the alternator drive belt, remove the loom and the link wire to the starter, remove the 2 mount bolts (10mm spanner) and it's out with a bit of a lever to start to move it :-£
Transit Custom Limited H1 L2 DCIV, now converted to van by removing the seats etc so now twin side loading doors, fully kitted out with Sortimo racking, always loaded to capacity & averages 35mpg :D

Obvious thing is the sensor, have you checked that?

I also have the same problem with a ford transit engine code dofa
The speedo fluctuates to 80mph even though the diagnostic equipment
is reading 20mph so it is getting a signal but somewhere along the line it is
Being interrupted :/
I've changed the speed sensor and output shaft on the gearbox still no joy
Changed the instrument cluster still no luck any direction to head towards
Would be much appreciated before I rip the dash out and check the wiring and
Ecu

T200 CONNECT LX TDI(75) SWB 2006
i have the same problem with the speedo

i have the part already but wanted to check that i'm looking at the right one before i take it apart.

hopefully one of you can help even just a picture with an arrow would confirm what it is i'm trying to do

so far i have run the self test on the dash and the needles are both working and i checked the codes and nothing there.
