changing a fuel filter

Postby eddie t.n.t » Sat Aug 05, 2006 6:36 pm

Could someone please let me how you go about changing a fuel filter for a transit 53 2.4 duratorque diesel. Is it a case of unscrewing the old one and screwing the new one on? And does the system need bleeding at all?

Fill the new one with diesel before fitting as it makes bleeding easier!

Twist off the plastic threaded ring - pull off filter - fill new filter with diesel - push new filter fully home - twist on the plastic threaded ring - start engine and run for a minute or two on fast idle

there is a primer on top of the housing but if you've filled the filter with diesel you wont need it

have fun :D

Isn't there a 'water in fuel light' connector/gadget on the bottom that needs to be disconnected and fitted to the new filter :?: (like the MK5?)

the heads can suffer from distortion if the filter is not inserted correctly.

there is an alignment tab on the element which must engage with the correct part of the head.

yes, swap over the water in fuel sensor if fitted, it's not there on them all.

you might not have the hand primer on the top of the filter head as it was deleted from service some time ago, so filling the element is a wise move.

Mine doesn't seem to have this. Was this fitted only on the very early mk6?
