Frozen engine

Postby mattcat » Sun Dec 05, 2010 4:41 pm

Hi all, got a frozen engine 03 diesel, had a coolant leak and was filling up with water, van was sitting 4 days no useage and weather hit -8, I went to start it and she wouldn't fire.
I defrosted the pipes I could get to and got the jump leads out, but still wouldn't go.
The starter is trying to go but engine not kicking in.
Got the aa out and after trying to jump with his battery he said the timing belt has snapped( spent 2 mins at the van and didn't take anything off to look).
Could the water pump be jammed frozen too?
My mechanic mate says to let it thaw right out and try it again as there is no timing belt on these, its a timing chain and they very rarely snap.
The engine hasn't started at any time since the freeze and was working fine beforehand.
Any advice please, Cheers.

You could try taking the drive belt off for the water pump so when your cranking it it's not trying to turning the water pump when turning. This may help tell you if it's the water pumpthats frozen. If it starts don't let it run to long as the water won't be circulating with out belt on

Is it a 2.4 or a2.0? As the 2.4's are on one big serpentine belt and the 2.0's are a separate belt all together?

Do not attempt to start the engine until its thawed out There is NO point !!! You could try getting one of those parrafin heaters used in greenhouses and put it under the sump And wait !! If its that frozen though the chances of having done no damage are practicly nill !

Why no Antifreeze ?????

Its a 2.0 litre engine and there was no anti-freeze as it had a bloody leak and just not had time to get it fixed.
As the song goes "If I could turn back time".....................
Anyone know when the next thaw is in Scotland, May or June!!

July  Get some heat on it, couple of fan heaters, let it thaw then try and start it, when it does warm it up then drop the water and refill with 50/50 Antifreeze mix

Thanks for replys.
I'll keep you posted, think we might be getting a high of 3 degrees C Thursday :)
I might give it a blast before hand if I can get a half decent heater into it!
I so hope that aa guy was in a hurry and couldn't be arsed (Sunday morning 10am and stinking of drink)
Fingers crossed.
Thanks again.

first thing to do is take the bottom pipe off the radiator

that way, if it starts to defrost it can leak out, instead of just re-freezing the next night !

if you get it to start with the water pump belt off (still with bottom pipe of the radiator) run it for 1min and then shut it off, give it a couple of min and then do the same again.... keep doing that to warm it up and defrost it ;)

On the 2.0 the water pump belt is on your right hand side of the engine if your stood facing the front of the van with the bonnet open. It's a single belt ran off the front cam on a tensioner. Just back the spring loaded tensioner off and pop the belt off simples
