motorcaravan speed limits?

Postby solarman » Wed Jan 19, 2011 7:31 pm

I have read in several forums that a van converted to a motorcaravan is allowed to go 'faster'regarding speed limits?Surely speed limits apply to all vehicles don't they or are there special cirmstances/ specific carriageways ,roads where this will apply? Can some one clarify this if possible with some examples, thbanks,

On a single carriageway the speed limit for a panel van is 50, a motorcaravan can do 60 the same as a car. On a motorway a van can do 60 and a motorcaravan can do 70. Obviously 30 and 40MPH and any other posted speed limits apply.

Grab a copy of the highway code, a lot of things change over time and it can be worth while keeping up to date.

so if there is 50 mph limit on a dual carriageway and i had a van then it's 50 mph,but if i had it changed to a motorcaravan
i could then go at 60 mph?Why is this, not disputing you but just curious?

Just checked and -
Only car-derived vans with a maximum weight of under 2 tonnes are subject to the same speed limits as cars. In other words, all Transit-sized vans (and some smaller ones) are subject to a different set of speed limits to cars.

Here are the correct speed limits for most vans:
Single carriageways: 50mph
Dual Carriageways: 60mph
Motorways: 70mph

If there is a posted limit of 50 on a dual carriageway then everyone has to stick to the 50 posted limit.

See http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/sp ... peedlimits for details

OK, so just to throw a spanner in the works, when you enter a motorway in Soctland they have this sign

It's misleading as it does not mean you can do 70 in a HGV.

No but drivers of restricted vehicles should know the limits for the vehicle they are using.

The limit for hgv's over 7.5 ton is 60mph.On a motorway there is no difference for 7.5 ton and under.

See enclosed Link regarding the UK speed limits
http://www.smartdriving.co.uk/Driving/D ... imits.html
Regarding campervans If you are over 3500 Kg in europe the law is a bit Gray
I spent a lot of time looking up this subject as I was 3850-kg with a car on a trailer behind
no problem up to 3500-kg
The law and speed limits changed in 2000 when they brought in new road tax laws regarding
Camper-van's or Motor-caravans, Private Goods class was introduced for camper-vans over 3500-kg and slightly lower road tax I pay £195 on my van
