Crankshaft pulley failure

Postby pippin » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:58 am

MK7 2.2 130 FWD.

Turning at full lock, very slowly, big clunk and power steering failed.

I noticed a belt had come off the pulley thing.

Called AA hoping he would be able to put it back on.

Nope! The entire pulley came off in his hand.

Apparently the centre part is hard rubber which had disintegrated.

The AA man reckoned that Ford UK would have to get one sent from Germany.

Anyway, got recovered all the way home from London to mid Wales.

The vehicle is only 3½ years old, 27k on the clock, Hymer motorhome.

Any clever gurus out there who can tell me if there is likely to have been any collateral damage to the engine?

Is it simply a matter of bolting on a new pulley?

Is elaborate setting up and positioning required?

Thanks, in anticipation!

PS - Superb service from the AA from start to finish.
No long waits, constantly updated on progress by mobile and TXT.
Had three changes of recovery vehicle en route due to drivers hours and the distance but transfers all quickly done with no hanging around. It is even being forward recovered this morning from our home to a garage for repair.
Can't do better than that!

There shouldnt be any damage other than the pulley itself and the belt as this is only the auxillery drive belt , water pump, alternator, power steering pump so you should be ok, unless the belt tangled up around something on failure

Thanks TIMO - no nothing got tangled up so that's good news!

I have an extended (not Ford) warranty so it should be covered.
No doubt the robbing b*st*rds will try and wriggle out of the claim!

They may do mate , it should be an easy straight forward repair , its a shame you had to get towed half way round the world for a bit of rubber  im sure AA could have done better than they did TBH. :?

The AA did very well.

We were visiting our daughter and sleeping in the motorhome outside her house as she has no spare beds.

We were actually 40 miles away from her house, with our grandaughter so it was all a bit complicated.

It was a Sunday afternoon and the AA man reckoned it might take some days to get the spare part.

We would have had nowhere to stay down there and we were due to travel home today anyway for a commitment this evening.

It really suited us to be recovered to home, empty the van of food from the fridge and various bits'n'pieces and have it repaired locally.

It has just been loaded up and taken to our garage 20 miles away - all part of the same job!

Let's hope the warranty company come up trumps and pay for the repair.

Same thing happened on mine 4 weeks ago.

It was fixed under warranty (they had it 2 days), you should be covered.

Got it back yesterday, all tickety boo.

£138.40 for the pulley
£ 54.35 for a drivebelt kit
£ 18.35 for a vee belt
£ 80.00 for two hours labour
Plus the dreaded 20%

Now to fight the warranty company to shell out.

Same thing happened to our Hymer - twice in 18 months. Last night was the latest time, fortunately just a mile from Ford dealer. Camped overnight in their carpark and waiting for repair. They say this is not a common fault.
