BLANKING YOUR EGR.Does it effect the fuel economy.

Postby Felixx » Tue Mar 15, 2011 1:56 am

As the title suggests,does blanking the EGR valve increase or decrease your fuel consumption?.I think in the present economic climate any fuel savings must be any drivers priority.Now whilst we know that blanking the EGR will extend the performance in terms of less crud blocking up the inlet manifold,is the downside more fuel consumption?.It would be very interesting to hear from anyone who has already blanked their EGR to see what results they have had and what's what with their present consumption levels. It will not increase your fuel consuption, but may reduce it slightly, what it will do is help keep your inlet clean which in turn helps keep your emmissions clean and your fuel consumption down

If the EGR is functioning correctly, you may see an improvement in consumption.
If the valve is not working right you probably will see an improvement in mpg.

Don't forget the improvement in driveability & low down performance along with keeping the engine (inc oil) cleaner for longer.
There really is no downsides!

That last bit of your answer is what I wanted to hear.As I also have a Vuxhall Vectra 16 valve,and that is blanked,(with excellent results I might add).However,the inlet manifold,and the way that the whole induction system works,is very different to that of the DI engine,and that is what prompted me to ask in the first place,having read the earlier post on blanking.I will be blanking now,but didn't want to do it if there were any adverse effects.Thank's. I've got a mate that had a 1.9 Vectra sri (150?) diesel, that was running erratically, with the odd misfire flat spots etc. I'd been telling him for ages to blank the egr 1st before investigating anything else......
After about a year we got round to doing it - he agined about 4 mpg & said the car had never ran aswell!!!

I do it on every diesel as a matter of course & never had any negative results.....

What effects does it have on a mk7 2.4, is it just as simple as removing it and blanking of manifold?
will I get any lights come on on dash or anything?

Although that's not what he asked. He asked would it make the light come on?!

[quote="TIMO"]

I think the common answer to the question is,that because the EGR is not allowing exhaust gasses to enter the inlet manifold,the MAP sensor gives a false reading to the ECU,and that lights up the EML to show the "fault" that it thinks is there.This can only be eliminated by unblanking the EGR or getting the EGR function deleted from the ECU via a remap.
