Mk7 07 Rear disk replacement

Postby tilly » Tue Mar 15, 2011 11:11 pm

I've had a squealing coming from the rear o/s axle for a few weeks now. If I applied the hand brake slightly it would go. So, today I decided to strip down the brakes, clean them up, and grease the mating faces with copper grease. Tried a drive, and the noise is gone... :D

I did notice that the disc and the pads are well worn, 82k, and need replacing.

There are 6 torx bolts in the hub, and Im guessing you remove these to get at the disc, so you can remove it. Does the disc comeoff as a whole hub, and where is the best place to buy a set of discs and pads. Im not going down the Ford route, as they are so expensive, but only as good as a pattern part....

i take it that its a fwd transit then??????, you will also have to remove the big 36 mm nut in the middle and slide the whole lot off the stub axle, then remove the 5 bolts and press the disc off

FWD 115ps standard GLX Transit....

cheers for the replies.... Can the torx bolts be taken off in situ, as it would be easier to crack them off whilst on the hub...

I have access to a press, so it doesn't look too difficult a job... Squeaking came back on a 150 mile ride out ...

Are the centre nuts standard, or handed ?

Also, is it a difficult job to wind back the callipers, and how is it done on these....

RWD----- take the half shaft out the middle, undo the big nut, pull the whole lot off the axle casing, pull off the abs ring, undo the 10 torx bolts and smack the crap out of the disc until it comes off, replace the hub nut and hub seal as part of the job as you dont want to refit and 100 miles up the road the hub seals are leaking

One side done, pretty easily. Hub was a bit of a pain to press off, as it needs some force. My van is only 4 years old, so I guess this will be a real pig of a job as they rust and age...

The other side is proving a little more of a pain. Hub wouldn't press off, and it started to rip off the disk as more pressure was applied. Had to ease it off with two chisels, a little bit at a time..

Putting it back on, I found the hub was still loose, so I applied a bit more torque.... fatal.

The spacer between the bearings crushes..I'm guessing a bit was jolted loose with the separating operation... New set of bearings ordered for tomorrow morning, but they are £160 plus vat... (for a bearing set!!!!)

I've removed both bearing cases now, and its all ready for reassemble in the morning..

What would have been missing between the two bearing sets ?

Last one is the "spacer" or whats left of it...

Anyone know what the hub centre 36mm nut torque setting is ?

How strange I just replaced the rear discs and pads on my 56 plate only dne 54k and the drivers side rear was f*** it wouldn't come of the hub even after heat had been on it I had to take the stub axle off put it on a 50 tonne press and it still wouldn't come of easy. After a while it smashed the old disc and then the disc came of the bearing but bent the stub axle so on top of replacing disc and pads I had to but a stub axle only avaliable from fords at £110!!! And a new bearing and hub £60 + vat wht a nightmare job tht turned out to be lol

Going to be charged £160 tomorrow, for a bearing set.... I can see trouble ahead..

Got to get the girl running in the morning. She is laying in the office yard... work to be done..

I can see how you had trouble with removing the hub, these are going to be real pigs for garages / owners in years to come... Neither stub axle was lubricated, so the bearing was rusting onto the axle. Had to apply a smear of grease to prevent it happening again. I suppose all of the salt spread on the roads in the last few years is taking its toll on vehicles...

Sorted. The bearings ordered by the parts dept were for a rear wheel drive... Had to drive to Stoke to pick up a new hub assembly, as they are sold as a one piece item. I can now see there is a small inch long, solid spacer between the two bearing sets, that had dropped out, causing the bearings to squeeze together...

Its on the bench, and about to be fitted now..
