Clutch Bearing How easy to take gearbox out

Postby ginsambo » Fri Mar 18, 2011 8:31 pm

I've had a rattly clutch bearing since it was put in new. Last two days there has been some hineous noise from the clutch area, like some metal part tumbling about in there or the clutch has a broken spring. Makes a noise in gear or in neutral, with clutch engaged or depressed so I'd better invetsigate it.

What's the best method for taking gearbox out whilst supporting the engine and stopping it from rocking back into the bulkhead, as I seriously cannot be f@@ked to take engine out again which means disconnecting radiator, fuel pipes etc etc, and this is the only method I've ever used, know no better and willing to listen to advice as I am too lazy these days with no energy. Could I not ratchet strap the engine to a tree to stop it rocking back after taking off the gearbox subframe?

I took the gearbox off without supporting the engine in any way without issues (i had a jack under the G/Box when undoing the X member and gearbox bolts.

I also made a plate which bolted to the gear change bit to lift the box using the engine crane - but I dont know if that made life easier or not

wont the engine mounts hold the engine?
never done a transit but on a beemer,
just exhaust off,
heat shield off,
prop drop
remove gearbox x member/mounts
unbolt gear box n selector,
remove clutch slave cylinder then kinda grab onto chest, wiggle and roll out under motor with it in yer arms!

fook knows if a tranny is like that?
bit heavier i guess?

no need to take the exhaust off on a mk5 (or a slave cylinder! )

The engine mounts are more or less central on the engine so it doesn't tend to want to drop

when i changed a TDi clutch last year i used a pit (thanks again PSVHGVFLT) and put the gearbox back in on my shoulder, it was not hard, but the pit could have done with being about a foot deeper, i am 6'4"

You reckon I'I be alright with just a slice of softwood between the bulkhead and engine then and leave it unsupported then Matt? Could get the engine hoist out to balance it but can I ever be arsed to hook out and assembly the damn thing.

The other thing is accessing the two top bellhousing bolts - did you rock the engine down slightly to get at these, or able to get at them with subframe still on? As I remember it winds me up so much trying to get at them, as explains why I take whole engine out usually.

its easy
disconnect clutch cable , spedo cable , battery ,and reversing light switch
remove the starter motor
remove the gearstick 3x torx bolts inside the cab area
remove prop from gearbox and undoo centre prop bearing to allow prop to move out of the way
remove small cover from the bottom of the fly wheel area
support box and undoo the x member then just undoo the gearbox bolts and pull it out
be aware it is heavy

Anyone fancy doing it for me for a tenner? - Don't want to get my cracked hands oily...

Alright, straightforward then, I'II give it a go tommorrow. Live and learn and curse a lot....probably.

....Not that heavy, I mean nowher near as heavy as a Sierra 4x4 MT75 - I went to collect one of them and bent down to pick it up thinking it would weigh the same as a Transit box....big mistake, thing was about twice the weight...but then things always seem heavier when someone is watching you..

I didn't even bother with softwood or anything it was solely on the engine mounts

Great, I must be thinking of the centre of gravity of the engine and box together...I'm a bit rusty already. Thanks.

Good way to split the mounts. Always worth supporting the engine, I normally use an old seatbelt tied around the manifold and the front panel.

What do you think the mounts normally support mike? The gearbox mount doesn't support the engine weight at all (which can be seen by the fact the engine doesn't move with the gearbox out!

No additional load and if your sensible you dont pull the engine about too much, certainly less movement than you would get with the engine running

And the front panel?? Yeah that will make a huge difference! I wouldn't rely on that to support anything except the radiator and plastic grille
