Fitting A Waeco Electric Window Kit To My Mk3 Transit

Postby Leeday » Thu May 26, 2011 11:42 pm

Hi everyone ..... been a while I know  but been having a mid-life crisis  or maybe life has been treating me S##t lately  but hey ho, what doesn`t kill us, only makes us stronger :D
Anyway, whilst sorting through my attic ready to sell off every thing I own :? I came across 2 Waeco "magic lift" kits that I had bought many moons ago to fit on my old Shogun (which has long since died and gone to a better place) so I thought aha.... poor van has been very neglected of late, so lets treat it to one of these leccie window kits :D
Image

Looks good so far....... lets open the box

Image

OMG  what are all these bits.............
...........well the drive part looks simple enough ....

So I read through the instructions ................ 5 times ... and slowly becomes clear,
Remove door panel..... hmmmm ok

Anyway to cut along story short, this kit utilises the original wind mechanism, so you basically remove door trim, remove winder handle, fit a splined bush onto the winder stub thingy (there is an amazing assorment of bushes to fit nearly every vehicle known to man), you then fit another splined bush to the drive mechanism .... but then the clever part is a 3rd bush goes between these 2 bushes...... now the purpose of this is that should the window motor fail...battery dies, or whatever and your window is down and it starts to chuck it down with rain, you can remove the middle bush which seperates the drive motor from the window mechanism, insert this handle................

Image

.............and manually wind the window up :D
The kit comes with a vast array of brackets to mount everyting and the drive motor mechanism as in picture 3 can bent into any angle required to make it fit the door aperture... also comes with all wiring, electric window switches.... everything needed, even the blanking plugs to cover the holes in the door panels, (which have removable caps allowing access to the cogs so you can use the emergency manual handle if required)....
Well have fitted the kit and it works well on both windows...... very quiet and very smooth especially considering the Transit window mechanism is a brutal looking set up....
Drivers door..............

Passenger door..............

Electric window switches in centre pod (left switch for passenger window, right switch for drivers window)..........

Have yet to make up new door panels, and when I have done this will add more photos to show :D

Cheers Alan.. :D Glad to see your van is up and running now :D

I also found (in the attic in my box of toys) a alternating flash relay :D :D :D which I have also fitted and wired up to my front (yellow) fog lights :D and it looks amazing... will do a video clip when it gets darker and post it up..
ILLEGAL -- Probably,
DO I CARE -- Not at all,
This is the alternating relay:

I put blue house alarm strobes behind my grille on my nova and they flashed if the alarm was set off and a hidden switch

:D would love to have mine blue but I think thats a definite tug from mr plod :D
The blue strobes though would be very effective on the dash home after work through rush hour traffic

Well decided to make new door cards up as the vinyl covered hardboard one had got wet and mis-shaped, been cut by previous owners and the plastic pockets were broken & split...... so as I have ply lined the roof I decided to do the same to the door panels... its different............ but I like it :D heres the pictures:
The plywood marked out ready for cutting:

Cutting procedure :D with my trusty Bosch jigsaw:

One coat of Antique Pine Ronseal 5 year woodstain:

2nd coat of the above:

Door cleaned and new plastic liner fitted:

New panel installed:

Now just shaping and preparing the passenger side panel.
With this 8mm thick ply door card fitted the electric window cannot be heard operating and the door has a nice strong feel to it, especially when you close it.... no rattles, clunks or tinny sounds :D
