I asked this question before I looked into getting a large van, I was told that all skip lorries are rear wheel drive because it is best to Push a heavy weight than to pull one.

That's when I bought a rear wheel drive, front wheel drive is for girls.

thats a shame, why do they make a fwd?, it seems a bit pointless if you can't carry much?

The floor of the fwd is 10cm lower than the rwd, which can make a difference to some people.

Never had RWD vans and ive never had any issues with weight.had a few laughs over the winter watching the RWd's try to keep them straight or even moving, mine never put a foot out of place all winter in even the worst of the conditions :)
We have about20 rwd's at work and they all struggled in the snow and ice, they are now slowly moving over to FWD vans.

Also depends what size of van you're buying - most of the SWB are FWD, and most of the LWB are RWD

The bigger van is better for towing trailers on the open road, but more of a pain when it comes to reversing in tight spaces

The RWD gives you more ground clearence
The FWD (2.0l) tends to be better on fuel
The RWD (2.4l) has more torque

i found the front wheel drive spot on, better payload, 2.2 engine better on fuel etc, only down side was the ride was a bit "harsh" when empty

Never had a problem driving a Rwd in the snow. You either know how to drive or you don't :!:
