ECU reset...the official method

Postby lightning » Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:31 pm

Well, here's the official line.
It's called a "Power Latch".
Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
Turn off the ignition, then turn it on again to position 2 (running position) DO NOT start the engine.
Open bonnet and REMOVE BATTERY POSITIVE LEAD with the IGNITION STILL ON.
Then you have to touch or short the positive wire (that you just took off the battery) to earth (still with the ignition on)
Turn off the ignition.
Reconnect the lead to the battery.
Start the engine and DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE, let the engine warm up until the cooling fans cut in, or at least until the temperature gauge shows normal operating temperature. (Should not take too long as the engine was already at operating temperature)
Then drive normally, accelerating steadily up to 4,000rpm through the gears if possible.
This resets the ECU and it will then re-learn fuelling etc.
Does not take long as no need to leave battery disconnected for more than a few seconds.
Radio will need code entering and clock will need resetting.

this may be a stupid question, but why might i want to do this?

Ive had the warning light come on now and again (like once a month max) and the codes come back to do with fuelling - would this be worth a try?

#### Disclaimer required! #####

seen things like this go wrong on forums before now!

Lightning where did you acquire that info? id be getting that verified by Coconut or someone else whos a ford Techie before you perform just in case....

If for any reason it was wrong you may regret it! if you have already done it with no consequences let us know the difference

I would perform this after my next service if indeed genuine as wondered how old is the map its running and how effecient it is.

For a minute there I thought you were saying to short the battery terminals.
Had to re-read that bit.

I think that re-setting the ECU simply removes old fault codes, it won't alter the installed software

This old post has reappeared, sorry I've not replied...I have not been on the forum for a few weeks.

It came from a customer who is an engineer for one of the breakdown companies, he said it was the "official" method that they use for "most cars".

It only clears the ECU of "learnt parameters for the engine, and registered faults" The ECU re-learns settings when you next drive the vehicle, it usually takes about 10 miles before it's back to normal.

This is all information given to me by the engineer.

He said there are other ways to do it but this one is instant, with no waiting for the ECU to reset.

I have done the above and everything is fine if not better perfomance and yes its a tdci and what i would say is turn your radio off before you try this as the radio goes mental for about ten minutes... Yes all the lights and codes go off and the ecu is on a learning curve.. As for reving high through the gear changes I didnt do that just drove it normally..
all is fine at this moment and it doesnt blow black smoke but blue instead maybe thats the learning curve that the ecu is on..
