MK5 DOHC timing chain tensioner replacement

Postby Innertemple » Tue Oct 04, 2011 11:59 pm

Hi,
my van has been making tapping/knocking noises at startup which become quieter after a short while.
After scouring sources it seems my chain tensioner may need replacing.

If anyone has any other suggestions what it might be, please let me know as i would like to exhaust all avenues b4 purchasing a kit and setting out dismantling it.

In any event, if it is the tensioner that needs replacing could someone please give me a run down of what parts i would need for the job, including replacement of any gaskets/seals/washers etc and any products im gonna need for the job.
Also any recommendations for any such products are welcomed to aid my search.

Im looking at getting it done in a couple of weeks and will try to document it for the site if it proves useful to someone else.

Many thanks

Paul

Hi,
sorry, didnt mention what van it is :P.

Its a RWD P'reg Transit tourneo, 2.0 petrol dohc. (which is a Ford 14(Not sure what engine code))i think, please correct if im wrong).
btw It also has an early, multi point injection lpg conversion, not sure if this makes a difference to anything i need other than the plug gaps.

thanks

Mine rattles too, on startup - but only if I have not used it for a couple days. I suspect worn cams which obviously quieten as soon as the oil gets going. But, I have worried it could be the chain as I have heard about this. I'll keep my eye on this thread... good luck with the chain replacement.

Yep, I thought noise was from top but couldnt be sure. It may be tensioner as it only lasts for a short while. Im going to have a look in the top anyway tho as it sounded like tappets at first.
I thought it had hydraulic tappets and understood these auto adjust so really not sure.
A couple of weeks ago the rattle didnt go away as quickly and lasted a bit longer, then later in the day it dissapeared again.
Im lookin for a runabout atm so I have more time to check it out as both my missus and me cant be without a motor.
Thx for link ill check it out, as I havent got amanual to cover this engine which is annoyin.
Any other manual cover this engine?. I believe its ford 14, 8v 2.0 dohc.
Thanks

The later 2 litre Sierras, and the "frogeye" Scorpios all used this engine, so a Haynes for these will cover that same engine :D

I think I bought the chain guides from Fords just in case, although mine looked ok and the rubber gasket in the pics was surplus. Maybe a Sierra version used this with the different front cover.

IIRC I fitted the tensioner wheel, plunger, chains and oils seal.

Some said to replace the bottom pulley bolt as it's a stretch bolt but my Fords supplier hadn't got one and said they had never sold one ever so not to worry, I didn't

What parts exactly am i going to need to properly replace the chain and tensioner? including any bolts/seals etc?

Having been a bit strapped, i still havent sorted my van yet, the tapping is worse and i have to get it sorted so looking for kit at the moment and also making checklist of exactly what to check for to diagnose the noise.

Sorry to sound stupid, but what do you mean exactly by oils seal?

also btw, i found this useful:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/dohc20chains.jpg

from:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/timingchain29cos.htm

DOHC Timing Gear

The DOHC engines have many parts in common.

On the right the DOHC2000 is shown. Both the 8V and the 16V use this arrangement.

There are two simplex chains of unequal length, one for the cams and the other for the oil pump. The timing chain (4) rides the crankshaft pulley to run over a tensioner pulley (6) operated by the tensioner (8), then over the camshaft pulleys. An upper chain guide (10) is fitted between the cam pulleys.

It passes the chain guide (11) operating on a fulcrum provided by the collared bolt (21).

The oil pump drive chain runs on the forward pulley (1) passes a blade tensioner (19) using tension from the spring (9) and then over the oil pump drive pulley (3) and returns.

Any tips on checking tappets/adjusting tappets including how to do this and how to set correctly?

many thanks

apologies for multiple replies, but any recommended spark plug for my ford i4 2.0 dohc, it has lpg conversion and have seen a few different plugs claiming better performance, but dont really know.
