Postby IRMA999 » Sun Oct 09, 2011 4:55 pm

There is no replacement interval. Tensioners dont fail like they used to on mk6. Never seen or heard of one go either.

As long as the vehicle is serviced like Ford say, then they will last for years / miles

hi
just done a 07 mk7 2.4 135, failed tensioner, my 1st (and probably not my last) guides showing no signs of wear, tensioner u/s, timing had jumped with inevitable valve meets piston joys damage caused was pretty expensive, inlet cam was scrap as lobes spun on shaft, cam carrier re-designed so rocker shaft sub carrier took a hit and the pressed steel rockers broke, but unfortunely one of them exited thro the side of the cam carrier. this was welded ,dressed up and re-fitted, inlet sprocked had its teeth ripped off , good news is less labour than mk6 but but price of bits to repair was more than mk6 (even allowing for a new head on mk6), but i suppose with 210k on clock it hadnt done bad.

in my experience of mk6 and mk7 its the wrong oil that causes the problem, i know loads of garages that dont put 5/30 oil in when serviceing ,and soon after the starts to rattle on start up, ive never had to replace a tensioner in any of my transits and thats been over a million miles, yet my mate brought a mk6 with no rattle ,had it serviced by a garage who didnt use 5/30 semi synth and a few thousand miles later its got a rattle on start up, coincidence?

no jacko it wasnt done at your place, i myself have serviced it for the last two years or so, been serviced religously bang on schedule changing both filters and using good quality 5/30 semi syn oil (v/w)

hi
sounds very familier ,inlet cam and next to sensor, same place exactely, on the one i did there was loads of play on the rockers ie cam roller had lots of play on pin it turns on, as i said on previous post, good quality oil and genuine ford filters, changed on or before service due, van used on mainly motorways , usually heavily loaded and maybe thrashed, at the rate it goes thro pads it might be abused.

The oil shouldnt have anything to do with the mechanical ratchet part of the tensioner failing though, if that part is right it shouldnt need any oil pressure at all, to not cause any rattle at start up.
Even if the wrong grade was used youd think that the tensioner would still be under oil pressure ok so that the chain pressure is not all forced on to the ratchet mechanism ALL the time while running....

The mk7 tensioner just looks the same as the sh*t mk6 type. Is that what happend to these mk7 tensioners, could it just be pushed back passed the ratchet mechanism :?: :?:

Why dont they go back to the ratchet leg type one :?:

When changing the tensioner on a MK7, is there a complete kit to buy and change and is it worth changing the chain at the same time. Also does the front grille need to come off? (as I have lights fitted into mine)
